**Fire Safety Education in Action!**

Our crews had a great week visiting **Dalton Elementary, Prairie View Elementary, and Mullan Trail Elementary** to talk with students about fire and life safety!

Students learned important safety tips, including:
🔥 Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years
🔋 Smoke alarm batteries should be changed at least once a year
🚪 **Close Before You Doze** — sleeping with bedroom doors closed can help slow the spread of smoke and fire
📱 Safe charging habits for phones, tablets, and other devices

Of course, there was also plenty of time to check out the fire trucks and spend some time with our firefighters!

Thank you to the students and staff at Dalton, Prairie View, and Mullan Trail for welcoming us. We love getting out into our schools and helping our youngest community members learn how to stay safe!

KCFR is proud to host a weeklong mechanic training!

This week, our mechanics are joined by members of Coeur d’Alene Fire, Spokane Valley Fire, City of Spokane Fire Department, and Spokane County Fire District 9 for hands-on training with representatives from our fire apparatus manufacturer, Pierce.

Keeping our apparatus well-maintained and our mechanics up to date with the latest knowledge and techniques helps ensure our crews have reliable equipment when our community needs us most.

A big thank you to all of the participating agencies and to Pierce for sharing their expertise and investing in the people who keep our apparatus ready to respond! 👨‍🔧🚒

🔌 Practice safe charging habits with phones, tablets, and other rechargeable devices

Thank you to Ponderosa Elementary for having us! We always enjoy the opportunity to spend time with our local students and help them learn simple steps they can take to stay safe. 🚒❤️

**National Child Passenger Safety Week | September 20–26**

Every trip matters. Every child deserves to be properly protected.

National Child Passenger Safety Week is a great reminder to take a few minutes to make sure your child’s car seat or booster seat is the right size, properly installed, and being used correctly every time you travel.

Car seats can be confusing. When should your child move from rear-facing to forward-facing? When is a booster seat appropriate? Is the seat installed tightly enough? Are the harness straps positioned correctly?

You don't have to figure it out alone.

If you're unsure about your child's car seat or need help with an installation, Safe Start is a local resource offering professional child passenger safety checks and installation assistance.

Taking a few minutes to have your car seat checked can provide peace of mind and help ensure your child is properly protected before you hit the road.

Buckle up. Check the seat. Every trip. Every time.

September 11, 2001 — We Remember

Today, the members of Kootenai County Fire & Rescue pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We remember the 343 firefighters who lost their lives after entering the World Trade Center, knowing there was danger but never hesitating to answer the call. We remember the police officers, paramedics, EMTs, and countless civilians who made the ultimate sacrifice while helping others.

In total, 2,977 innocent lives were lost that day.

For those of us in the fire service, September 11 carries a profound meaning. It reminds us of the responsibility we carry every time the tones drop, to run toward the emergency, to help those in need, and to stand beside our brothers and sisters when the call is at its hardest.

Twenty-five years later, their courage continues to inspire us.

Today, we honor their lives, remember their sacrifice, and hold close the families, friends, and colleagues who continue to carry their memory.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

Today we celebrate Chief Seth Hohenstreet!

Congratulations to Assistant Chief Seth Hohenstreet, who was pinned to lead our new special projects role. Seth started with KCFR in 1995 and has given three decades to this district rising from firefighter through engineer, lieutenant, captain, and deputy fire marshal. He has served our district in a number of ways and on a number of committees throughout his career. He steps up wherever the district needs him and now he’ll help guide the strategic work that moves us forward.

We promoted two very important people last week. Today, we extend congratulations to Assistant Chief, Justin Capaul who was pinned as assistant Chief of Training.

Justin joined KCFR in the year 2000 and has spent 25+ years working through the ranks as a firefighter, engineer, Lieutenant, captain and battalion chief. He’s led our training division since January, and our people are sharper and better prepared because of it. Throughout his career he’s served on countless committees, managed numerous programs and has helped move this district forward. Now he’ll continue that work for the entire district.

Congratulations Chief Capaul. Our people are in good hands.
