🌧️ HEAVY RAINFALL & FLOODING SAFETY REMINDER 🌧️

With the significant amount of rain our area is receiving, Garza County Emergency Management urges everyone to use extra caution when traveling.

Heavy rainfall can cause water to accumulate quickly on roadways, especially in low-lying areas, dips, and creek crossings. Even roads you travel every day can become dangerous when flooded.

⚠️ TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN!

🚗 Never attempt to drive through a flooded roadway. You cannot always tell how deep the water is or whether the road underneath has been washed away.

🌊 Just 6 inches of moving water can knock an adult off their feet, and 12 inches can carry away many vehicles.

🚧 Do not drive around barricades or road closure signs.

🏠 If you do not need to travel, consider staying home until conditions improve.

Remember: No destination is worth risking your life. When you encounter water over the roadway, turn around and find another route.

Stay safe, Garza County!

🔥 Fire Prevention Week: October 4–10 🔥

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower.”

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, including phones, tablets, power tools, e-bikes, toys, and more. When damaged, improperly charged, or used with the wrong equipment, these batteries can create a serious fire risk.

A few simple habits can make a big difference:

💥Use the charger or charging cord designed for your device.

💥Stop using batteries that are swollen, damaged, unusually hot, leaking, or giving off an odor.
Charge devices on a hard, flat surface instead of beds, couches, or other soft materials.

💥Avoid leaving devices charging unattended for long periods.

💥Keep batteries and chargers away from heat and direct sunlight.

💥Never throw lithium-ion batteries in household trash. Use an approved recycling or disposal location.

Fire prevention starts with the everyday choices we make at home.

Preparedness isn’t just about what you have. It’s also about what you know.

This weekend, why not challenge yourself to learn one new skill that could help you, your family, or your community during an emergency?

That could mean learning basic first aid or CPR, practicing how to use a fire extinguisher, learning how to safely shut off utilities, improving your weather awareness, or even teaching yourself how to read a map without relying on your phone.

You don’t have to become an expert overnight. One new skill can make you more confident and capable when something unexpected happens.

Learn something today that could make a difference tomorrow.

Emergency managers don’t wait until something happens to start figuring things out. They identify risks, know what resources are available, make plans, and prepare for the “what ifs.”

You can do the same at home.

Know the emergencies most likely to affect your family. Decide where you would go if you had to leave quickly. Choose an out-of-town contact everyone can reach. Keep medications, important documents, pet supplies, chargers, flashlights, and other essentials where you can get to them easily.

Think through the things your household would need if the power was out, roads were closed, cell service was limited, or you had only a few minutes to leave.

You don’t need a complicated emergency plan. You just need one your family understands and can actually use.

Be your family’s emergency manager.

🔥 WILDFIRE AWARENESS 🔥

Wildfire activity remains a serious concern across Texas. State responders assisted with 18 new wildfires in a single day, and more than 1,200 wildfires have burned across Texas so far in 2026.

Please do your part to prevent the next one:

• Avoid outdoor activities that may create sparks
• Never drag trailer chains
• Use extra caution with welding, grinding, or equipment outdoors
• Secure and completely extinguish debris burns
• Report smoke or fire immediately

One spark is all it takes. Help us protect Garza County.

🔥 Prevent Wildfires. Protect Texas.
