Rhinebeck death under investigation

🚨 Traffic Alert- Town of Rhinebeck 🚨

This is to advise that there is currently an incident under investigation in the Town of Rhinebeck, and as such Route 9g between Route 308 and Route 9 in Rhinebeck is closed for the investigation and motorists are urged to avoid that area until further notice. The Sheriff’s Office is the lead agency in the investigation, and is being assisted by the New York State Police.

Prescription Drug & V**e Take Back Day

Help keep our communities safe! Join us on Saturday, October 24, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Wappingers DMV parking lot for Prescription Drug & V**e Take Back Day.

Safely dispose of unused or expired prescription medications and vapes to help prevent accidental poisonings, misuse, and environmental contamination.

This is a convenient drive-up event — no need to leave your vehicle!

This past Saturday, members of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office attended the Second Annual Community Day for Domestic Violence Awareness in Wappingers Falls, held in memory of Melinda “Mindy” Brugger and Melanie Chianese.

We are grateful for the opportunity to stand alongside community members and local organizations to raise awareness, honor the lives remembered, and show support for those affected by domestic violence.

Together, we can continue to raise awareness, offer support, and remind survivors that they are not alone.

Rhinebeck man charged with damaging cameras and causing brush fire

Deputy Sheriff Erik R. Renninger
End of Watch: October 9th, 1992

Today we pause to remember Deputy Sheriff Erik R. Renninger of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office. At approximately 6AM on October 9th, 1992, Deputy Renninger responded to Route 9G in the Town of Rhinebeck for a reported disabled motor vehicle in the roadway that was leaking gasoline. Upon his arrival and while crossing the road, Deputy Renninger was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on Route 9G. Deputy Renninger was transported to Northern Dutchess Hospital and then to Albany Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Deputy Renninger, you are not forgotten, and we thank you for the ultimate sacrifice you made while serving the residents of Dutchess County. Forever Rest in Peace sir, we have the watch from here.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic violence can happen to anyone. No one deserves to live in fear, and no one should have to face abuse alone.

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office stands with survivors and remains committed to protecting our community and helping those affected by domestic violence.

This Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, members of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office will be at the Second Annual Community Day for Domestic Violence Awareness in Wappingers Falls.

The event is held in memory of Melinda “Mindy” Brugger and Melanie Chianese and brings the community together to honor their memories, raise awareness, and support the ongoing fight against domestic violence.

Recognize it. Speak up. Support survivors. Break the cycle.
