As October continues, we couldn’t be more proud of our Arlington Fire District members for their continued commitment to bringing fire prevention education to schools throughout our community!

These visits give children the opportunity to learn lifesaving skills, ask questions, and become comfortable with firefighters and the protective equipment we wear. Learning early helps children understand how to recognize an emergency, respond safely, and bring important safety conversations home to their families.

Key lessons worth reinforcing at home include:

- Know what a smoke alarm sounds like and what to do when it activates.
- Make and practice a home escape plan, including two ways out of each room where possible.
- Choose an outdoor meeting place where everyone knows to gather.
- Get outside, stay outside, and never go back into a burning building.
- Recognize firefighters as trusted helpers—even when our gear makes us look and sound different!

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), working smoke alarms reduce the risk of fatal home fires by approximately 60%. That’s a powerful reminder that the lessons shared in school matter at home, too.

Thank you to our members for their dedication, and to the teachers, administrators, and school staff who welcome us into their classrooms. Together, we’re helping children build confidence and safety habits that can last a lifetime.

Ask your child what they learned about fire safety and take a few minutes to practice together. Fire prevention is a year-round commitment!

As temperatures drop and home heating season begins, the Arlington Fire District reminds residents that a few simple precautions can help prevent a devastating fire.

Three quick tips to keep your family safe:

- Give heat space. Keep furniture, curtains, bedding and anything else that can burn at least 3 feet away from heating equipment.

- Turn space heaters off whenever you leave the room or go to bed.

- Schedule annual maintenance. Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected each year by a qualified professional.

Stay warm. Stay safe. Help us keep our community protected this heating season!

It’s Fire Prevention Week! The Arlington Fire District is joining communities across the country October 4–10 to highlight the importance of fire prevention and life safety. (nfpa.org)

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA):

• Nearly 3 out of 5 home fire deaths occur in homes without smoke alarms or with alarms that fail to operate.
• Working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by approximately 60%.
• Cooking caused 44% of reported U.S. home fires during 2017–2021, making it the leading cause during that period.

Our commitment to education extends throughout October. We are very proud to spend the entire month visiting area schools and teaching school-age children essential fire safety and life safety practices. These visits help children recognize hazards, understand what to do in an emergency, and bring valuable safety lessons home to their families.

It was an honor and a privilege for the Arlington Fire District to host retired FDNY Chief Joseph Pfeifer for lunch today ahead of his presentation this evening at the Culinary Institute of America to local first responders.

We are incredibly grateful for his time and willingness to share his experiences, stories, and lessons with our younger firefighters and members of the department.

Chief Pfeifer, thank you for everything you did for the FDNY and the City of New York 25 years ago, and for all you continue to do in service to firefighters, first responders, and communities across the country. Your leadership and dedication to the fire service are truly inspiring.

Today, the Arlington Fire District joins our community and our nation in solemn remembrance of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

We honor the 343 members of the FDNY who made the ultimate sacrifice, along with all those who lost their lives that day. We also remember the first responders, survivors and families who continue to suffer losses from 9/11-related illnesses.

Twenty-five years later, our thoughts and prayers remain with every person and family affected by this historic tragedy. September 11 forever changed our nation, the American fire service and the course of history.

We will never forget.

Back-to-School Week is here!

As students and teachers begin a new school year, the Arlington Fire District reminds everyone to keep school bus safety in mind:

1. Slow down and watch for children near bus stops.
2. Never pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing.
3. Stay alert, children may unexpectedly enter the roadway.
4. Keep a safe following distance behind school buses.
5. Remind children to wait for the driver’s signal before crossing the street.

We wish all our students, teachers, and school staff the best of luck this year. Be safe, work hard, and reach for the stars!

The Arlington Fire District is proud to announce that we are the recipient of a $25,000 Municipal Investment Grant (MIG) from Dutchess County.

This funding will be utilized to make important infrastructure improvements at one of our fire stations, including the replacement of an aging boiler and remediation of an antiquated oil tank.

We are extremely grateful for the continued support of our partners at Dutchess County and for their investment in our firefighters and our community. Funding opportunities like the MIG program allow the District to address critical facility needs while continuing to focus our resources on the health, safety, and well-being of our firefighters and all of our members.
