Have you heard of NYPIRG? It's the New York Public Interest Research Group. It's a non-partisan, nonprofit, research and public education organization. They have two initiatives that are important for us.
Climate Change
The planet is heating up, and that temperature rise is accelerating. Climate change is the most pressing environmental, public health, economic, and social justice issue facing our planet. Join NYPIRG’s Community Action Network to help New York move toward a clean, renewable energy future — supporting efforts that shift New York away from fossil fuel use, nuclear facilities and infrastructure and to wind and other renewables.
Solid Waste & Recycling
New York is facing a solid waste crisis: It has been reported that most, if not all, of the state’s landfills are nearing capacity and could close in the coming years. Dutchess County’s waste incinerator burns waste so inefficiently, it actually pollutes more than it burns. Orange County fixed this issue, we need it fixed in Dutchess County. The state needs to develop a “circular economy” that reduces the amount of wastes, recycles as much as possible, and reuses products — particularly packaging — well before anything is discarded. NYPIRG is working to ensure that New York moves forward with policies that prevent the production of waste and improve successful recycling initiatives.
