🍂💧 Fall is here and it's time for a flush! 💧🍂

If you see a KPUD crew opening a hydrant or a "KPUD Flushing" sign in your neighborhood, don't be alarmed. They are doing routine maintenance that helps keep your water system clean and clear.

Did you know all of KPUD's water systems are supplied by groundwater?

Groundwater naturally contains minerals like iron and manganese, which can build up inside water mains over time. That's where directional flushing comes in.

Instead of simply opening one hydrant and letting water flow out, KPUD crews close specific valves and open hydrants in a planned sequence. This directs a strong flow of water through targeted sections of the system to:

👉 Remove mineral buildup and sediment
👉 Improve water clarity and taste
👉 Refresh the system with fresh water
👉 Help maintain water quality

While KPUD is flushing the system, it's a good reminder to give your own plumbing some attention, too:

🏠 Flush your household plumbing.
💦 Flush your water heater according to the manufacturer's instructions.

A little routine maintenance goes a long way toward keeping your water clean, clear and flowing. 💧

Imagine a Day Without Water — October 15, 2026

Could you give up THREE? Which three are you choosing? 👇

🚿 Shower
☕ Coffee
🧼 Washing your hands
🚽 Flushing the toilet
👖 Doing laundry
🍳 Cooking a meal
🪥 Brushing your teeth
🍽️ Washing dishes

No shower. No morning coffee. No washing dishes. No laundry. Which three would you choose?

Today is Imagine a Day Without Water, a National Day of Awareness that asks us to think about something that's easy to take for granted: the water we rely on every day.

Water is part of nearly everything we do - from brushing our teeth and preparing meals to keeping our homes, businesses and communities running.

Here in Kitsap County, our water begins with local rainfall that replenishes our groundwater supplies. That makes valuing and protecting this resource something we can all be part of.

And while you're thinking about it, consider one small action you can take to value water today - fix a leak, shorten a shower, turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth, or simply refill your reusable water bottle. 💙

We need water for a lot more than just those eight things. Think about:

🩺Healthcare
🔥Firefighting
🌽Agriculture
💇🏼Business
🏞️Ecosystems

Imagine a day without water. Then imagine everything water makes possible. 💧
