FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Galvez Lake Fire Department Responds to Timberstone Drive Structure Fire
Yesterday afternoon, the Galvez Lake Fire Department, along with the Seventh District Fire Department, responded to a reported structure fire at 16156 Timberstone Drive.
Prior to the arrival of fire department personnel, the fire had already breached the roof of the residence. Initial arriving crews encountered heavy black smoke and fire coming from the roof.
Firefighters immediately deployed hoselines and initiated an interior fire attack. As conditions deteriorated and a partial roof collapse occurred, crews were withdrawn from the structure for firefighter safety and operations transitioned to a defensive attack.
Due to the size and intensity of the fire, additional manpower and resources were requested from Fifth Ward, St. Amant, Geismar, Sorrento, and Prairieville Fire Departments. Firefighters deployed multiple master stream devices to knock down the heavy fire conditions from the exterior.
Once the bulk of the fire was brought under control and conditions allowed crews to safely reenter the structure, firefighters transitioned back to an interior operation to complete extinguishment and overhaul.
In total, 26 firefighters and six fire apparatus responded to the incident. Crews worked for approximately 1Β½ hours to bring the fire under control and remained on scene for approximately five hours completing extinguishment, overhaul, and assisting with the investigation.
The Louisiana State Fire Marshalβs Office responded to assist with determining the origin and cause of the fire. The fire remains under investigation by the Louisiana State Fire Marshalβs Office.
Our thoughts are with the family affected by this fire and the loss they experienced. We are grateful that no residents or emergency responders were injured during the incident.
Galvez Lake Fire Department would also like to thank Seventh District, Fifth Ward, St. Amant, Geismar, Sorrento, and Prairieville Fire Departments for their assistance. Incidents of this size require significant manpower and resources, and we appreciate our mutual-aid partners for answering the call and working alongside our firefighters.
π¨π₯ FIRE SAFETY REMINDER π₯π¨
Electrical wiring in attics and other concealed areas can be damaged by rodents and other pests, potentially creating a serious electrical fire hazard. Fires that start in these hidden spaces can smolder unnoticed for a while before becoming a significant fire β which makes early detection so important.
Homeowners should stay alert for signs of rodent activity or damaged electrical components, and have any concerns evaluated by a qualified professional.
A few reminders to keep your family safe:
β
Test your smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries as needed
β
Replace smoke alarms according to the manufacturer's recommendations, and generally when they reach 10 years of age
Galvez Lake Volunteer Fire Department proudly participates in the Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office Operation Save-A-Life program. If you need smoke alarms installed in your home, contact us β we'll provide and install them free of charge for qualifying residents.
