🔋 Fire Prevention Week: Are You Charging Safely?

From cell phones and tablets to power tools and toys, rechargeable batteries are part of our everyday lives. But improper charging can create a serious fire hazard.

A few simple reminders from the Prescott Fire Department:

🔌 Always use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.

🛏️ Never charge devices on beds, couches, or under pillows.

⚠️ Stop using batteries that are swollen, unusually hot, or giving off strange odors.

✅ Unplug devices when charging is complete.

Small habits can make a big difference in preventing fires and keeping your family safe!

From phones and tablets to power tools, e-bikes and other rechargeable devices, batteries are part of everyday life. Taking a few simple precautions can help prevent a fire.

We’ll be sharing a few quick fire safety reminders throughout the week.

Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Bradley Ritger, who died in the line of duty from injuries sustained while serving his community.

We join public safety agencies across Wisconsin in honoring Trooper Ritger’s service and sacrifice.

Rest easy, Trooper. 🇺🇸

A big thank you to Les from Life Link III for spending the evening with Prescott Fire! 🚁

With approximately 40 years of experience flying helicopters, including 20 years with Life Link III, Les brought a wealth of knowledge to share with our crew. While the weather kept the flight crew and helicopter from joining us tonight, Les made the trip down and spent time talking through landing zone setup, what flight crews need from firefighters on the ground, and some of the tips and tricks that help us work better together.

Training like this helps make sure that when the tones go off, everyone knows their role and we can work together as one team to give our patients the best care possible.

Thanks, Les, for sharing your time and experience with us tonight! 🚒🚁

🔥 Fire Inspection Reminder for Prescott Businesses

PFD, in partnership with Fire Prevention Services, will be conducting the second round of our required 2026 fire inspections at local businesses over the next couple of weeks.

We appreciate the cooperation of our local business owners and encourage you to take a few minutes to make sure your fire and life-safety systems are up to date before your inspection.

Some of the most common items identified during inspections include:

Sprinkler system inspection and testing
Exit and emergency lighting
Fire extinguisher inspection and servicing
Commercial cooking vent and hood cleaning and inspection

These inspections are an important part of keeping our businesses, employees, customers, and community safe.

Thank you to Prescott's business community for your continued cooperation and commitment to fire safety! 🚒🔥

🚁 TRAINING NOTICE 🚁

Prescott residents may notice a Life Link helicopter landing near the Prescott Fire Department this evening, 9/14.

This is part of a scheduled training with our department, so please don’t be alarmed if you see or hear the helicopter in the area.

Training opportunities like this help our crews stay familiar with air medical operations and prepare for the times when every minute matters.

Thank you for your understanding!

A big thank you to everyone who supported Prescott Fire during Friday night’s Prescott Daze Street Dance! 🚒

Our firefighters had a great time bartending, visiting with the community, and raising funds for the department. Thanks to your generosity, we collected more than $700 in donations by 9:30 p.m. alone!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, threw a few dollars in the boot, and supported your local firefighters. We’re fortunate to serve such a generous community!

And thank you to everyone who helped make another Prescott Daze a great one! ❤️🚒

25 years later, we still remember.

Today, we honor the 2,977 people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, including 343 FDNY firefighters who went to work that morning and never came home.

For those of us in the fire service, that number will always carry a little extra weight. We remember their courage, their sacrifice, and the families who have carried their loss for the past 25 years.

Today, we remember them all.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸

In Memory of Ralph “Butch” Schaffer

The Prescott Fire Department mourns the passing of retired firefighter Ralph “Butch” Schaffer, who passed away July 31 at the age of 85.

Butch proudly served the Prescott Fire Department for 28 years. He was a hardworking and dedicated member of PFD, and his connection to the department continued long after his retirement. When his health allowed, Butch was a familiar face at department gatherings with our retired members — a reminder that membership in the fire service doesn’t simply end when the gear is hung up.

Butch’s ties to PFD also run through his family. His stepsons, Mark and Mike Hudak, are retired PFD members, and his nephew, Mike Sterud, is also part of the PFD family.

Today, as family and friends gather to celebrate Butch’s life, Engine 1 and our 1937 fire truck will be on display at Old Ptacek’s Event Center in recognition of his many years of service to our department and community.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Butch’s family, friends, fellow firefighters, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest easy, Butch. Thank you for your 28 years of service to Prescott. We’ll take it from here.
