Grand Canyon tip: don’t forget to look up.

The park is home to a surprising variety of birds of prey, including golden eagles, red-tailed hawks, peregrine falcons, and California condors.

So while everyone else is watching the canyon, keep an eye on the cliffs, treetops, and sky too. You never know what you’ll spot.

Clarkdale is worth a stop of its own. 👀

This Verde Valley town was founded in 1912 as a copper-smelting company town and became Arizona’s first master-planned community.

Today, you can walk through the historic district, learn more about the area’s copper history at the Arizona Copper Art Museum, and make a full day of it with nearby stops like Verde Canyon Railroad or Tuzigoot National Monument.

It’s an easy one to overlook when Jerome and Sedona are right nearby, but there’s a lot of history packed into this little town.

One of the best ways to see a different side of Flagstaff? Get off the pavement. 🌲

Coconino National Forest has a huge network of designated forest roads around Flagstaff, but they’re not all maintained the same way and conditions can change fast.

Before you head out, check the current Motor Vehicle Use Map, make sure the road is open to your vehicle, and don’t assume a route is passable just because it shows up on a map. Some roads can get rough enough that high-clearance or AWD is the smarter move.

A little planning goes a long way when you’re exploring beyond the pavement.

Prescott traffic jam, Northern Arizona edition. 🦌

A good reminder when you’re driving around town: wildlife doesn’t always wait for a crosswalk. Slow down, stay alert, and give them plenty of room to finish crossing.

Anyone else had to stop for a group like this lately?

Don’t call it a day when the sun goes down. ✨

A few things can make a Northern Arizona stargazing night way better:

• Check the cloud cover and moon phase before you go
• Give your eyes 20–30 minutes to adjust to the dark
• Use a red-light setting on your headlamp or flashlight when you can
• Keep bright phone screens to a minimum

No telescope required.

Fall is starting to show up around Prescott. 🍂

Banning Creek is a good one to keep in mind this time of year, especially if you’re looking for a forest walk without heading far outside town.

The trail winds through ponderosa pine and creekside vegetation, which makes it a nice spot to catch some seasonal color as October moves along.

If you’re heading out, check current trail and weather conditions first, since fall color can shift quickly from week to week.

Looking for a fall day trip in the Verde Valley? Put Verde Canyon Railroad on the list. 🚂

The four-hour round-trip ride leaves from Clarkdale and travels through Verde Canyon, with access to open-air viewing cars along the way.

And if fall color is the goal, keep an eye on the calendar: the railroad’s Fall Color Tours take place from late October through late November.

Definitely one to book ahead and build a day around.

One of the more fun Route 66 stops in Williams: dj’s Wild West Junction. 🤠

It’s part restaurant, part saloon, part Old West throwback, all right on historic Route 66. You can grab food at the SmokeHouse Café, stop into the Long Horn Saloon, or just check out the western-style courtyard and buildings.

It’s an easy add-on if you’re already spending the day in Williams.

Have you stopped here before?

Fall is one of our favorite times for a Prescott day trip. 🍂

Start with a morning hike around Thumb Butte, then head downtown for lunch and a walk around Courthouse Plaza and Wh***ey Row. If you’ve got more time, add Goldwater or Lynx Lake, or make a later-October trip out of it and check out the Halloween displays along Mount Vernon Avenue.

Prescott also has a full October event calendar this year, so it’s worth checking what’s happening before you pick your weekend.

If you’re traveling Highway 89A between the Page area and the North Rim, make time for a stop at Navajo Bridge and nearby Lees Ferry.

At Lees Ferry, you can actually drive down to the Colorado River, and it’s also a major launch point for river trips into the Grand Canyon.

It’s one of those easy add-ons that can turn a travel day into part of the trip.
