SUBJECT: Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association Scholarship Program

Fillmore County Sheriff John DeGeorge announced today the commencement of the Law Enforcement Scholarship Program for 2026. Sheriff DeGeorge proudly announced that the MSA Board of Directors has established a scholarship fund for the awarding of up to 18 - $2,000 scholarships for this year. These scholarships are due to the coordinated efforts of the 87 elected Sheriffs of the State of Minnesota.

The MSA gives special recognition to the financial needs of students attending the peace officer skills course or one of the two- or four-year law enforcement degree programs around the state. “The MSA Board of Directors acknowledges the current challenges in recruiting and greatly appreciates the individuals who decide to serve others through a career in law enforcement. This is one way that we can support that honorable decision,” said Deputy Director Brian Johnson. “This remains a noble profession and offering these scholarships is another we that we can promote the profession and support those who wish to serve and protect in our communities.” said Fillmore County Sheriff John DeGeorge.

The MSA recognizes the importance of pre-entry training for people considering law enforcement as their career choice. The MSA also acknowledges that some students may need outside help in meeting the costs of such training, even though they excel academically.

The MSA Scholarship Committee, in making its selection of awards, intends to achieve representation from all geographical areas of the state. The scholarship deadline is November 30th, 2026. Awards will be announced on the MSA web page and on social media at the start of 2027. Application forms and a statement of procedures are available at the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office. Scholarships are only available to students currently enrolled in one of the following three categories:

1. Mandated POST Skills Program
2. In their second year of a two-year law enforcement program.
3. In their third or fourth year of a four-year college criminal justice program.

To qualify, students must have completed at least one year of the two-year program or two years of a four-year program. Students meeting these criteria are invited to obtain a scholarship application form from their local sheriff’s office or online at www.mnsheriffs.org.

***SCAM ALERT***

A fake business calling itself "Divine Auto Sales", is operating a website and page listing cars for sale and claiming that they are in Mabel Minnesota. No such business exists in Mabel, or anywhere in Fillmore County. Fillmore County Sheriff's Office Investigators are actively investigating the fraud, and are working to have the page, and website taken down. In the meantime, please always remember:

Never send payments for goods or services through a wire transfer to someone that you do not know personally. Often times the recipient is located in a foreign country and cannot be identified. Often times it's not possible to recover the money sent.

It is never a good idea to send payment for an item without seeing that item in person. Online scammers often list items for sale that don't even exist.

***Public Notice***

Sheriff's Office and dispatch non-emergency phone lines will be down for necessary maintenance for about 1 hour beginning at 5 pm today. 911 lines will remain operational. If you try calling the Sheriff's Office usual non-emergency number and it doesn't go through, call 507-686-0578 to speak with a dispatcher. We will update this status when the normal phone lines are back up and operating.

*Training Alert*

Throughout this week, the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office is hosting an FBI instructed ALERRT Active Shooter Training at the Fillmore Central High School in Harmony Minnesota. Along with our office, agencies from throughout the area have been invited and are attending this training. This training consists of a mix of classroom and walkthrough instruction, and practical training scenarios. There will likely be a large presence of squad cars, and officers moving into and out of the school on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon as officers conduct live scenario exercises. This is an essential training to prepare officers for such an incident, and we are grateful for the partnership with Fillmore Central Schools in helping us facilitate this important training.
