Firefighter of the week Brian Huffer
Brian began his career in the fire service in 2010 at the age of 16, joining the Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Company in Anne Arundel County. What started as an interest in firefighting has grown into a lifelong passion and a commitment to serving others. Brian is the first person in his family to pursue this path, and he has always believed in the importance of lending a helping hand wherever it is needed. Being part of an organization that makes a meaningful difference in people’s lives has been one of the most rewarding experiences of his life.
Throughout his years of service, Brian has had the opportunity to teach cadet classes and participate in public speaking events throughout the community. These experiences have allowed him to share his knowledge, encourage the next generation, and inspire young people who aspire to pursue a career in the fire service. He believes it is important not only to serve our communities, but also to help develop and mentor those who will carry on this tradition of service in the future.
One of the most challenging aspects of being a firefighter is responding to calls that hit close to home, especially when helping someone he knows personally. These moments can be emotionally difficult and serve as a reminder of how deeply our work affects the lives of others. Despite these challenges, Brian would not trade this calling for anything. He chose this life because he believes in being there for people during some of their most difficult moments. Knowing that he can make a difference, provide support, and help someone in their time of need makes every challenge worthwhile.
Brian’s wife of eight years, Danielle, and his three children, Mason, Brayden, and Raelynn, are his greatest source of support and motivation. Their love and encouragement means more to Brian than words can express. He is incredibly proud to set an example for their children by showing them the importance of compassion, dedication, sacrifice, and giving back to others. His only hope is, they grow up understanding that true fulfillment comes not only from what we accomplish for ourselves but also from the positive impact we have on the lives of those around us.
Looking back on the past 16 years, Brian can honestly say that serving in the fire service has been one of the greatest privileges of his life. It has shaped who he is, strengthened his sense of purpose, and given countless opportunities to make a difference in this community. He is so grateful for every experience, every lesson learned, and every opportunity to serve. At the end of the day, knowing that he has helped someone when they needed it most is what makes these 16 years so meaningful and why Brian remains proud to be part of the fire service.
