The City of Prichard is notifying residents of two upcoming changes to residential garbage collection as the City works to improve the efficiency and consistency of sanitation services throughout the community.

Beginning Monday, August 17, 2026, the City of Prichard Garbage Department will collect one household garbage cart per residence. Garbage collection drivers have been instructed to empty only one City garbage cart at each household. The City recognizes that some households may require additional garbage capacity. Beginning October 1, 2026, residents will have the option to obtain a second garbage cart. Additional information regarding the process, requirements, and any applicable details will be provided as the October 1 implementation date approaches.

Beginning Tuesday, August 25, 2026, the City of Prichard Garbage Department will transition to a three-day-per-week residential garbage collection schedule. Under the new schedule, residential garbage collection will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. There will be no regular garbage collection on Tuesdays or Fridays.

Residents should follow the schedule below:

➡️Current Monday Route: No change. Collection will remain on Monday.
➡️Current Tuesday Route: Collection will move to Wednesday.
➡️Current Thursday Route: Collection will move to Wednesday.
➡️Current Friday Route: Collection will move to Thursday.

The City will continue to provide updates and reminders through its official communication channels as the new collection schedule takes effect. Additional information regarding the second-cart option will be announced prior to October 1.

Emergency residential garbage collection services are now underway following the Prichard City Council's approval of a 90-day emergency garbage collection contract.

Beginning Saturday, August 8, 2026, A1 McDuffie Sanitation will launch its residential garbage collection operations throughout the city. As part of the initial rollout, the company deployed three automated side-loader garbage trucks and one rear-loader truck to complete the Friday, August 7, collection routes and begin clearing the backlog of uncollected garbage across the community.

During this initial cleanup effort, crews will collect household garbage that has accumulated on the ground, including locations where residents have more than one garbage cart. The immediate priority is to remove the existing backlog and return the City to a consistent and dependable garbage collection schedule.

Residents are asked to leave their garbage carts at the roadside until they have been serviced, even if their normal collection day has passed. Crews will continue working throughout the city until all affected routes have been completed.

The Administration expresses gratitude to the Prichard City Council for approving this emergency measure, which will help restore reliable sanitation services for residents while long-term solutions continue to be evaluated.

The City will continue providing updates as collection efforts progress and appreciates the community's continued cooperation during the transition.
