Prince George Fire & EMS would like to congratulate Volunteer Firefighter Ross Long of Company 1 on successfully completing his Firefighter I certification!

Earning Firefighter I requires a significant commitment of time, hard work, and dedication. For a volunteer firefighter, that commitment often means spending evenings, weekends, and time away from family completing the classroom instruction, hands-on training, physical requirements, and testing necessary to earn this certification.

Ross joined Company 1 in the fall of 2024 after making Prince George his home in 2019. Outside of the fire service, Ross is a husband and father of three and has built an 18-year career in public transit. He currently serves as a Training Supervisor with GRTC in Richmond.

Ross put in the time, stayed committed to the process, and demonstrated his dedication to becoming a more capable firefighter and serving the citizens of Prince George County. Congratulations, Firefighter Long, on this well-earned achievement! We appreciate your commitment to Company 1, Prince George Fire & EMS, and the community you have chosen to serve.

Congratulations to Firefighter/EMT Joe Berry on receiving his shield today and officially completing his probationary period.

Since graduating from the Fire Academy in August of last year, Firefighter/EMT Berry has dedicated countless hours to learning, training, and serving alongside his fellow members. Receiving his shield is an important milestone and one that reflects not only the completion of probationary status, but also the effort, perseverance, and teamwork that brought him and all our former probies to this point.

Firefighter/EMT Berry is pictured with Battalion Chief Chris Taylor, Lieutenant Daniel Showalter and B-Shift.

Thank you also to Interim County Administrator Kristen Pudlow for stopping by to be part of the shield presentation today.

Another successful First Responders Day at the Prince George Farmers Market! ✅

Our members had a great time connecting with the community and demonstrating vehicle extrication techniques. Thank you to everyone who came out, asked questions, and stopped by our booth.

Serving our community is the best part of the job, and we couldn’t do it without your continued support.

A huge thank-you as well to the vendors, staff, and volunteers who donated raffle prizes and their time and helped make this event so special!

At approximately 4:50 p.m., Prince George County Fire and EMS crews were dispatched to the 16000 block of Lebanon Road for a reported brush fire in a remote area of the county.

The fire burned approximately 50 acres and required several hours to bring under control. Crews faced multiple spot fires while working to contain the incident. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

Prince George County Fire and EMS was assisted by all county fire companies, Virginia State Police’s Med Flight 1, Surry County Fire and EMS, and the Virginia Department of Forestry. Aerial imagery from the department’s drone and Med Flight 1 helped crews assess fire conditions and direct suppression efforts.

The fire was brought under control at approximately 8:30 p.m. It did not cross into Surry County. No structures were involved, and no injuries have been reported.

Virginia Department of Forestry personnel will remain on scene. Residents in and around the Lebanon Road area should expect to see and smell smoke for the next several days. Please use caution while driving in areas affected by smoke.

Congratulations to FF/EMT Ryan Christopher on successfully being cleared as an Engine Operator with Prince George Fire & EMS.

Ryan has continued to demonstrate a strong work ethic and a genuine commitment to improving himself as a firefighter and member of this department. His progress reflects the time, effort, and dedication he has put into developing his knowledge and skills.

Becoming an Engine Operator requires attention to detail, sound judgment, accountability, and pride in your position. The Engine Operator plays a critical role in the safety and effectiveness of the entire crew, and that responsibility should never be taken lightly.

Ryan has shown that he understands those expectations and has worked hard to earn this clearance. His continued growth and willingness to take on additional responsibility are great examples of the professional development we want to see throughout our department.

Congratulations, Ryan, on a job well done and a well-earned accomplishment. Keep working hard, taking pride in what you do, and building on this success!
