🔥 Close Before You Doze. Sprinklers Save Lives. 🔥

Over the past several weeks, West Windsor Fire & Emergency Services had the opportunity to attend three community events, where we demonstrated one of the most powerful fire safety lessons we can share using our residential burn trailer.

Our trailer is designed to simulate a home with a living room and two bedrooms. During the demonstration, a fire starts in the living room while the audience watches what happens to each bedroom:

🚪 Left Bedroom – Door Open

* Heat, smoke, and toxic gases rapidly enter the room, making survival unlikely within minutes.

🚪 Right Bedroom – Door Closed

* Simply closing the bedroom door dramatically limits the spread of heat and smoke, creating a much safer environment and providing valuable time to escape or be rescued.

💧 Then the Residential Sprinkler Activates
As the fire continues to grow, the residential sprinkler head operates, controlling the fire before firefighters even arrive. Instead of a room becoming fully involved, the sprinkler keeps the fire in check, reduces temperatures, limits smoke production, and significantly reduces property damage.

These demonstrations reinforce two life-saving messages:

✅ Close your bedroom door before you go to sleep. A closed door can mean the difference between life and death by slowing the spread of fire, heat, and toxic smoke.

✅ Residential fire sprinklers save lives. They are one of the most effective fire protection systems available, controlling fires in their earliest stages and giving occupants the time they need to escape safely.

As firefighters, we witness firsthand how quickly today’s homes can become deadly due to modern furnishings and open floor plans. That’s why West Windsor Fire & Emergency Services continues to advocate for requiring residential fire sprinkler systems in all newly constructed homes. Combining residential sprinklers with working smoke alarms and closed bedroom doors provides families with the greatest level of protection possible.

We want to thank everyone who stopped by our demonstrations, asked questions, and took the time to learn these important fire safety lessons. Education saves lives—and we look forward to continuing to share these demonstrations throughout our community.

🔥 Remember: Close Before You Doze. Support Residential Sprinklers. Working Together, They Save Lives.

🚨 WEEKLY RECAP 🚨

Over the past week, Engine 45 responded to 12 Box Alarm assignments, including incidents involving smoke conditions, reported fires, and two serious motor vehicle accidents with overturned vehicles.
Notable responses included mutual aid to Lawrence Township Lawrence Township Professional Firefighters for an overturned motor vehicle accident on Route 1, and assistance in Plainsboro Township Plainsboro Professional Firefighters Association - Local 4954 for a large fire involving multiple passenger vehicles and brush.
Beyond emergency calls, our members recently spent time cleaning and organizing tools to ensure our apparatus remains ready for service at a moment’s notice.
One of our member’s traveled to FAST Performance in Lockwood, CO to earn his TSAC-F Certification, expanding his knowledge in first responder fitness, wellness, and injury prevention along with other agencies from around the country.
Community engagement remained a priority as Engine 45 and Ambulance 45 attended Dutch Neck School’s STEM day with Princeton Junction Volunteer Fire Company , West Windsor Volunteer Fire Co. #1 , & West Windsor Police Department giving students and families a chance to explore our equipment and meet local first responders.
Whether responding to emergencies, training, maintaining equipment, or engaging with the community, our members remain committed to serving at the highest level every day.
