We often get asked by patients or their family members why the fire department is there when they called for an ambulance. This does an excellent job explaining it! Gibson County is blessed to have amazing paid and volunteer firefighters and without them our job would be nearly impossible. At Gibson County Ambulance Service we are very thankful for the help these men and women provide everyday.

🚒🚑 Why are Fire and EMS on calls together?

If you call 911 for a medical emergency, you may see both an ambulance and the fire department respond, and depending on the call, there can be a very good reason for that.

Fire and EMS often work as one team, bringing different people, equipment and capabilities to the same emergency.

On serious medical calls, firefighters may provide extra trained hands for CPR, patient movement, lifting, carrying equipment, scene safety or other lifesaving tasks within their level of training.

Some fire companies also have EMS trained personnel or Quick Response Services or Units, meaning medically trained responders may be coming directly from the fire station or in a separate response vehicle to begin or assist with patient care.

And sometimes the reason for both agencies being there is even more obvious.

At a serious vehicle crash, for example, EMS may be treating the patient while firefighters handle hazards, stabilization or extrication. In some communities, Fire Police may also be there helping close or control the roadway so responders can work safely.

There is no rule that says the fire department will always arrive first or that the ambulance will. Whichever available resource gets there first may begin helping, and the rest of the team joins in as they arrive.

So when you see several emergency vehicles at one call, it doesn’t necessarily mean too many people were sent.

Sometimes it means exactly what that patient needs:

Different roles. Different resources. One team working toward the same goal.
