Princeton's Microforest Celebrates First Anniversary 🎉

Princeton's Microforest recently celebrated its first anniversary with community members, volunteers, and project partners. The event highlighted the growth of the site over the past year and the collective effort that has helped it thrive. As the Microforest enters its second year, the Municipality of Princeton is seeking community feedback. Residents are encouraged to complete a short survey and share their thoughts on the project, its benefits, and opportunities for future engagement. The Municipality extends its thanks to Princeton's Shade Tree Commission, Environmental Commission and dedicated volunteers for their continued support of the project.

Statement from Mayor and Council on the Proposed South Brunswick Data Center

"We have grave concerns regarding how the backup diesel generators planned for the data center in neighboring South Brunswick will affect our community. When running, these generators will undoubtedly send emissions across municipal boundaries, often negatively affecting air quality and public health in Princeton’s residential neighborhoods and at two of our elementary schools. We urge DEP to deny the air permit application for the center in its present form.

The 20 generators, misleadingly characterized as “minor sources” of emissions, will run not only during power outages but also for routine testing and during periods of peak or critical demand. Powerful storms and extended heat waves are occurring more frequently in this region. The data center will significantly increase demand on infrastructure that is already under strain, and operating the generators will make the site a major source of emissions. The site should therefore be reviewed and regulated accordingly.

Governor Sherrill has formulated an approach to ensure that data centers in New Jersey will not burden electricity ratepayers or the communities in which they are located, including requiring data centers to add new clean energy capacity to the grid. While the relevant legislation has not yet passed the state legislature, DEP should be guided by the principles behind this plan. As a best practice, South Brunswick’s data center should have backup power in the form of a solar array, wind turbines, and/or geothermal generation paired with battery storage. If this approach cannot meet the entire demand, any additional backup power should be provided by natural gas generators combined with off-site clean energy infrastructure.

In the interest of our constituents and the residents of all neighboring communities, we strongly urge DEP to take every possible measure to ensure that this data center does not become an environmental blight on our region."

Respectfully submitted by the Mayor and Council of Princeton to NJ DEP.
