Our future firefighters had a great time getting an up-close look at Squad 39 during Fire Prevention Month!

The kids had the opportunity to explore the squad, learn about the equipment firefighters use, and see what it takes to keep our community safe.

It is always great when our members get to see the children of our past members when they are out performing public education at the schools in our fire district. Today our Squad Crew was able to meet former FF/Medic McDonald’s daughter Mia.

Thanks FF Murray, FF Herling and FF Borkowski for making Mia and her friends day Sonshine Lutheran Preschool.

FF Murray and FF Herling worked with FF McDonald for over 10 years together at PH. This is what makes PH a special place to work!

After more than 45 years with the fire district, Fire Chief Drew Smith will be retiring on October 23rd , 2026. Chief Smith began his career with The Prospect Heights Fire Protection District in 1981. He became the department’s EMS Coordinator in 1983. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1984. He became District Chief and the department’s training officer in 1989. He was hired full-time as Deputy Chief in 2000. Following his stint as Deputy Chief, he was promoted to Fire Chief in 2016.

Chief Smith has been instrumental in the progress of the organization and is well-known all throughout MABAS Division 3 and the surrounding communities. In honor of his illustrious career, the PHFPD will be holding a retirement ceremony for Chief Smith. Due to the construction of our headquarters station, the event will be held at The Old Orchard Country Club.

Chief Smith will take one last ride in the fire truck before arriving to family, friends, current members, and alumni for a walk-in ceremony. Please arrive prior to 4pm so we can have everyone line up and welcome Chief Smith when he arrives at the event. The ceremony will start shortly after his walk-in to the event. Following the ceremony, there will be an opportunity to take pictures with Chief Smith and the fire trucks.

Fire Chief Drew Smith Retirement Announcement

The Prospect Heights Fire Protection District Board of Trustees is proud to announce the appointment of Deputy Chief Kelly Cossman as the District’s new Fire Chief.

Chief Cossman will become the third full-time Fire Chief in the Department’s history. He brings extensive experience, strong leadership, and a deep commitment to the District and the community we serve.

The members of the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District are excited about this next chapter and look forward to working under Chief Cossman’s leadership.
