This week, students from Graphic Design IV visited Special Collections to learn about archives and view activist, political, and propaganda posters to gain inspiration for their project on political poster design. Included were: two from the Rhode Island College Revolutionary Student Brigade from the 1970s; a 1917 poster from the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation; a 1918 Third Liberty Loan poster to buy United States Government bonds; a 1975 Central Organization of US Marxist-Leninists poster for a meeting at Rhode Island College; another for a 1973 conference of North American Marxist-Leninists; and another published in 1972 by the Organization of Solidarity with the People of Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

In honor of LGBTQ+ History Month, a new exhibit from Special Collections is now on display on the fourth floor of the Adams Library featuring ads from LGBTQ+ newspapers from 1975-1984. Sometimes racy, often cheeky, always undeniably radical, these ads hearken back to an era of pre– and dawning–AIDS epidemic free love. The ads featured in this exhibit come from a variety of newspapers in the Alternative and Underground Press collection in Special Collections.

In continuation of Banned Books Week: Under the Tariff Act of 1930, US Customs officials, classifying it as legal po*******hy, banned the importation of James Joyce’s Ulysses. In 1932, Random House deliberately mailed a copy of the book from Paris to New York just so Customs could seize it, creating a legal showdown to fight literary censorship. The result was the 1933 case United States v. One Book Called Ulysses (5 F. Supp. 182, 1933), which overturned the ban on the book and redefined how American law evaluated literary obscenity. While a turning point, it unfortunately did not end battles over censorship and book banning.

This copy of the opinion is part of the Special Collections Rare Books Collections.

This week, students in HIST 203 US History 1920 to the present visited Special Collections. They examined materials from the collections and practiced key historical research skills, including contextualizing information within broader historical narratives and corroborating evidence across multiple sources. By comparing documents from different authors, communities, and formats, they identified similarities, differences, and complexities in historical interpretation.

In this class, students used the following materials from the 1940s: the Socialist Labor Party; Social Justice by Father Coughlin; photographs and service records from the Joseph George Ray papers; scrap metal and war bond drives related to the Schools at War project, from the Henry Barnard School records; and various educational and civic materials (published locally and nationally) that sought to mobilize students and communities in support of the American war effort.

Today marks the 88th anniversary of the Great New England Hurricane of 1938. This Category 3 storm slammed into the coast during high tide, pushing a devastating 15-foot storm surge up Narragansett Bay. Downtown Providence was instantly submerged under nearly 14 feet of water. Across the region, over 600 lives were lost.

Spain and Argentina will face off in the World Cup final this Sunday. RIC and Mortis have had to get creative when looking for equipment around the library to emulate their favorite players.

P.S. Please don’t use our bones or anatomical models as sports equipment—RIC and Mortis really need to practice.
