POSTED 10/25/26 - TRAVEL ADVISORY - No change to route directions.

From 7 AM on October 26 until 3 AM on October 27, 2026, there will be lane closures on the Newport Pell Bridge in both Westbound and Eastbound directions due to road work.

Routes 14 and 64 may be impacted by longer than usual wait times as a result of increased traffic congestion on the bridge. Passengers are advised to plan for additional time for buses to arrive and depart at bus stops.

"The number one reason someone gets on a bus is to go to work." - Christopher Durand, RIPTA CEO.

Last month, CEO Christopher Durand spoke with Ocean State Media's Ian Donnis about the value of public transit. "I think investing in RIPTA is not a social service; it's getting people to work," says Christopher. "It's giving people opportunity."

Christopher also spoke about the need for continued state investment in RIPTA. "We're working with employers," Christopher said. "We can help you access employees and we can help people get to these really good jobs. If we want people to get good jobs and raise their incomes, RIPTA's a part of that."

For Nick, public transit isn’t just part of his job — it’s his lifestyle. Nick joined RIPTA a little over a year ago as Manager of Fare System Administration in the Finance Department. Originally from Boston, Nick moved to Providence in 2017 to attend Island College (RIC) and he decided to stay after graduation.

While public transit was a new industry for him professionally, many of his skills carried over - including project management, working with data and spreadsheets, communicating with different stakeholders and, perhaps most importantly, solving problems.

Nick’s problem-solving has become a favorite part of his role. His days can look very different depending on what needs his attention. One day might involve researching how a new fare technology should work, while another could mean coordinating with departments across RIPTA on a project. And sometimes, something doesn’t work as intended, which sends Nick on a journey to figure out exactly what happened and how to fix it.

Much of Nick’s work happens behind the scenes, where a surprising number of decisions determine many seemingly simple actions for passengers. Everything from how a transfer works, to how long a fare validator waits for a response from a server, has to balance technology, reliability and the passenger experience. Now, he is seeing more of that behind-the-scenes work translating into improvements passengers will experience firsthand, including new fare validators on paratransit vehicles and the upcoming implementation of open payments, which will allow passengers to tap a contactless credit or debit card to pay their fare.

That experience was fitting, considering Nick was already passionate about public transit long before he worked for RIPTA. He doesn’t have a driver’s license and has never learned to drive, relying instead on transit to get where he needs to go.

From transit rider to Fare Manager, Nick helps shape the systems he depends on himself — even if getting there occasionally requires a spreadsheet with 30,000 rows.

Lights, camera, transit! 🎬 Just in time for Halloween, check out this surrealist short film titled "The Perfect Day for a Picnic" featuring RIPTA.

After winning the RIFC Rhode Island Film Collaborative's screenplay contest, writer/director Bob Lucas got the chance to bring his script to life with 60 volunteer actors from the community, use of a RIPTA bus and driver, and funding from the RIFC.

The 2012 film depicts Howard, a factory worker, who comes home from work each evening to find that his bedridden wife is changing. Watch the fourteen minute film for free here: tinyurl.com/5cbfur74
