Public Notice: Hydrant Flushing in Providence

The City of Providence will be conducting routine water main flushing starting tomorrow, October 6, 2026, and continuing until the work is complete.

The purpose of this essential maintenance is to improve water quality by breaking up and flushing out sediment that may have settled in the water lines.

Please do not be alarmed if you experience slightly discolored water during this time. While the water remains safe, we recommend avoiding doing laundry or using large amounts of water if you notice discoloration, as sediment can sometimes temporarily affect water clarity.

Thank you for your patience as we work to maintain the quality of our water infrastructure.

25 years later, another moment of silence

It has been 25 years since the September 11, 2001 attacks changed the United States forever.

On Friday, September 11, people across the country will pause to remember the 2,977 people killed that day and the lives forever changed by the attacks.

But this year's 25th anniversary will include something new.

The 9/11 Memorial & Museum is adding a seventh moment of silence to the annual commemoration ceremony, honoring the people who died in the years since 9/11 from illnesses connected to their exposure at or near the World Trade Center site.

For the past 24 years, the ceremony has included six moments of silence. They mark the times the two World Trade Center towers were struck, the Pentagon was attacked, Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania, and each tower collapsed.

The new moment will come after the reading of the names and will recognize first responders, rescue and recovery workers, survivors and Lower Manhattan community members who later lost their lives to 9/11-related health effects. It will remain part of the ceremony in future years.

The attacks lasted only hours.

Their consequences have lasted a quarter century.

Tomorrow, the silence will remember not only those who were lost on September 11, 2001, but also those whose lives were taken in the years that followed.

You can’t outwork trauma.

You can’t sleep it off forever. You can’t just “toughen up” and expect the hard calls, the deaths, the sleepless nights, and everything you carry home to have no effect.

And the fire service is finally learning that talking about mental health doesn’t make you weak.

This World Su***de Prevention Day, Firefighter Nation is continuing our focus on firefighter mental health through the lens of science.

We’re looking at what the research actually tells us about su***de, trauma, PTSD, sleep, substance use, resilience, treatment, and recovery in the fire service.

Not clichés. Not “suck it up.” Not feel-good advice.
Real research. Real conversations. Real options for firefighters who are struggling.

Because taking care of the people who run toward the worst days of someone else’s life has to include taking care of what those calls can do to them.

Know the signs. Know the science. Know that getting help is not the end of your career or a failure to handle the job.

Sometimes, getting help is how you stay in it.

To ensure our emergency responders—including our volunteers—remain qualified to operate our expensive apparatus, we conduct annual driver training. This mandatory training is essential for demonstrating the competence required to safely operate our vehicles.

As we celebrated the 250th anniversary of a free America, we began loading firework racks at 10:00 a.m. and faced every obstacle imaginable — extreme heat and humidity, sudden rain and fierce winds, multiple fire calls that left only two of us available for wiring, and ambulance calls that pulled two more away. We even had to pause the show at the 10 minute mark when unsupervised children ran toward the display.

Despite all that, we rose to the challenge and still finished in time for our 9:00 p.m. show. It was a great display, and I’m proud of what we accomplished.

A heartfelt thank-you to the firefighters who came in on their day off, and special thanks to Melvin Fulkerson, Mia VanCleve, Mike Ashcraft, Dustin Winstead, Joshua Taylor, Jacob Weaver, Nate Perry, Lee Jenkins, Gregg Bland — for loading and wiring. Thank you also to our local tourism committee for providing the resources that made this event possible. Your support, along with everyone’s hard work and professionalism, ensured a safe and successful celebration.

⛳ Friendly Reminder from Providence Municipal Golf Course

To help us keep our course safe, clean, and enjoyable for everyone, we’d like to remind all golfers of a few important golf cart policies.

🚙 Course-owned golf carts must remain on Providence Municipal Golf Course property at all times. While we do not have control over members using their personal golf carts, all golf carts owned by the course are not permitted to leave the property.

🧹 Please help us keep our carts clean. Before returning your golf cart, take a moment to:
• Remove all personal belongings.
• Throw away any trash.
• Leave the cart ready for the next golfer to enjoy.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and respect for our equipment. Thank you for helping us take pride in our course and provide the best experience possible for all of our guests! 💚🏌️‍♂️
