🎪 Step right up! It’s National School Lunch Week, and Provo City School District is celebrating October 12–16 with “Cafeteria Circus: Where School Meals Take Center Stage!”

Throughout the week, our cafeterias are bringing a little extra excitement to lunchtime with circus-themed decorations, photo booths, special menus, and activities for students to enjoy.

Our Child Nutrition teams have prepared a week of fun menu choices, complete with fresh fruits and vegetables. Here’s what’s on the menu:

🎪 Monday: Pizza Croissants or Circus Corn Dogs

🎪 Tuesday: Tumbling Tachos (tater tot nachos) or Ringleader Burgers

🎪 Wednesday: Spaghetti & Cannonball Meatballs or The Greatest Slice on Earth! (pizza)

🎪 Thursday: Tightrope Tacos or The Magic Muffin Meal (scratch-made muffin, string cheese, yogurt, and animal crackers)

🎪 Friday: Lion Tamer Pot Pie or Big Top Cheesy Dunk (whole-grain cheese-stuffed breadstick with marinara)

Depending on the school, students may also enjoy prize drawings, trivia, coloring contests, and other festivities. And everyone is invited to participate, including students who bring lunch from home!

But the real stars of the show are the people behind the meals. ❤️

Our Child Nutrition employees work throughout the year to provide nutritious meals, welcome students, and help keep them ready to learn. This week is an opportunity to recognize their work and the care they bring to our schools each day.

A little crunch and a little citrus! 🫛🍊

This week’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) selections are sugar snap peas and Cara Cara oranges!

Sugar snap peas are known for their crisp texture and naturally sweet flavor. Unlike many other pea varieties, they’re eaten whole, pod and all!

Cara Cara oranges have a colorful surprise inside. Their pinkish-red flesh and slightly tart flavor might remind you of grapefruit, but they’re actually a variety of navel orange first discovered in Venezuela during the 1970s.

Two colorful choices and two opportunities for students to try something fresh!

October’s ProvoREADS Family Reading Challenge is simple: read together!
Our district specialists and teachers offered a bunch of reading advice to make reading easier and deepen understanding. Here are a few ideas they shared:
Read out loud. Even when children can read on their own, hearing fluent reading helps with vocabulary, expression, and comprehension.
Let your child choose the book. Interest matters. Favorites, graphic novels, picture books, and rereading all count.
Ask questions before you read. Ask, “What do you think this will be about?” or “What do you notice on the cover?”
Pause and think aloud while you read. Try, “What do you think will happen next?” or “Why do you think that happened?”
Talk after reading. Ask about a favorite part, a surprising moment, how they feel about a character, or what they would change about the story.
Read the world around you. Menus, signs, billboards, recipes, captions on TV, instructions, and labels are all chances to practice reading.
Model reading yourself. Let children see adults reading for information, work, fun, or everyday life.
Don’t rush to give the answer. Give your child a little time to think, sound out a word, or explain what they notice.
Reread favorites. Familiar books help children build confidence, fluency, and understanding.
Keep it fun!
This month, find a few minutes to read, talk, and enjoy a story together. You’ll never regret time spent together!

🍎Apple Day in Miss Roundy, Miss Arnesen and Miss Gott’s kindergarten Classes! 🍎
On September 25th, Kindergarten celebrated fall and the letter Aa with a fun-filled Apple Day! 🍏🍎
They had a wonderful time learning about apples and enjoying apple-themed activities. The students explored apple colors, made apple prints, created an apple craft, practiced counting and graphing, made an apple necklace, and even enjoyed a little apple tasting! It was a fun day full of learning, hands-on activities, and lots of smiles. We loved celebrating the season while learning about the letter Aa! 🍎 A special thank-you to our wonderful volunteers for helping make our Apple Day so successful!
