The Tennessee State Fire Marshal's Office (SFMO) proudly announces the theme and submission rules for the 2026 Poster Contest!

This year’s theme “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower”commemorates Fire Prevention Week 2026 (October 4-11, 2026). Developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) this year's theme emphasizes the importance of buying, charging, and recycling lithium-ion batteries safely.

Lithium-ion batteries store a significant amount of energy in a relatively small space. These batteries can overheat, start a fire, or explode if overcharged or damaged. By learning how to BUY, CHARGE, and RECYCLE these batteries safely, you can help prevent a fire in your home.

Today’s homes burn faster than ever. You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Your ability to escape a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning.

Before entering the contest, please carefully read the following instructions and rules. Visit: https://www.tn.gov/commerce/fire/prevention-education-and-outreach/poster-contest.html

Important dates:
-August 17, 2026: Contest opens for submissions.
-September 25, 2026: Submission period closes.
-September/ October 2026: Judging conducted.
-October 2026: Winners announced.
-November 7, 2026: Awards ceremony held in Nashville (Location to be announced later).

Smoke alarms save lives, but only if they work. Take a few minutes to test your smoke alarms.

-You should hear three beeps, letting you know the alarm is working.

-Don't hear the beeps? Then it's time to change the batteries, if your model requires them.

-If your smoke alarm is 10 years old, it's time to get a new alarm because the sensor becomes less sensitive over time.

At around 2:13 today (8/15/2026), your Pulaski Fire Department along with the Pulaski Police PSO'S responded to Abernathy Drive for a report of a building on fire behind the main residence. Giles County Fire Rescue also responded due to our automatic mutual aid agreement. Arriving units found a 10×12 storage shed fully involved. The fire was in danger of spreading to the main residence but due to the quick actions of Pulaski Fire and PSO'S, the main residence was saved. The shed was extinguished quickly, but was a total loss unfortunately. Pulaski Fire wishes to thank Giles County and Fire Rescue, Giles Co E-911, and Pulaski Electric Service.

Many toys, remotes, and devices use small button batteries. No matter the shape or size, keep batteries out of reach of young children. Batteries can be especially dangerous if swallowed.

As students return to school, please slow down and stay alert, especially around school buses and bus stops.

Passing a stopped school bus when the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended is against the law. Drivers in both directions are required to stop, except when the roadway is divided by a physical median, such as a concrete barrier or grass divider.

Violating this law in Tennessee can lead to a fine and add 8 points to your driver's license.

🔋 Charge it safely. Store it safely. Know when to stop using it.

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, including e-bikes, scooters, other mobility devices, power tools, laptops and phones. Damaged or improperly charged batteries can overheat and start a fire.

Help reduce the risk:

• Use the charger made for the device or one approved by the manufacturer.
• Plug chargers directly into a wall outlet.
• Never charge an e-bike, scooter or other mobility device near a doorway or along your fire escape path.
• Do not charge batteries under pillows or on beds.
• Stop using a battery that is swollen, unusually hot, leaking, damaged or giving off an unusual odor.
• Have working smoke alarms in your home.

If a battery begins smoking or catches fire, leave immediately, close the door behind you and call 911.
