While out in the field this season, our crews have been lucky enough to come across both the caterpillar and adult stages of the Polyphemus Moth!

Moths play an important role in our ecosystem. As adults, they act as pollinators, while as caterpillars, they provide an important food source for birds and other wildlife.

Their adult stage typically only lasts for a few weeks, and the one we spotted was looking a little worse for wear. The caterpillar we saw, on the other hand, was looking healthy and plump. These caterpillars must consume all the energy they'll need to survive as adults, since adult Polyphemus Moths don't have working mouthparts and cannot eat.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Critters in the River this past Saturday! We had a great turnout and enjoyed a beautiful, sunny day exploring the South Fork of the Palouse River.

Critters in the River is all about discovering aquatic macroinvertebrates, which are small animals that spend part or all of their lives in water. The types of macroinvertebrates we find can tell us a lot about the quality of the water.

This weekend, we found water boatmen, dragonfly and mayfly larvae, crayfish, scuds, lots of leeches, and much more. It was a great day of exploration and discovery!

Did you miss this event and were hoping to attend? Don't worry - we plan to host it again next May. We hope to see you there!

Last week's Low and No-Till Drill Demonstration Day was a success!

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Clark Farms for a day focused on peer-to-peer learning, equipment education, and hands-on experience. Producers heard directly from other farmers about their experiences with different drills, saw five drills in action in the field, and talked one-on-one with drill operators and equipment representatives about how the equipment performs in our region.

We’ll continue to follow the seeded plots and share footage and observations as the crops grow. We’re excited to keep the conversation going and learn from what we see in the field!

A big thank you to Clark Farms for hosting, our sponsors for their support, and all the co-hosts who partnered to make this event possible: Pine Creek Conservation District, Whitman Conservation District, Rock Lake Conservation District, Washington Association of Wheat Growers, and Pacific Northwest Direct Seed Association.

Join communities across Washington state on Saturday, October 17th as we work to improve water quality and wildlife habitat in honor of Orca Recovery Day! We will plant native trees and shrubs at a stream restoration site near Pullman from 10 am – 12 pm.

While Pullman is far from the ocean, our water quality here affects waters downstream of us. Restoration efforts, including planting native plants along streambanks, help improve soil and water quality and create habitat for wildlife.

This is a family-friendly event. Learn more and sign up here: https://tinyurl.com/2uyux3mk

Our Research and Monitoring team recently spotted this young painted turtle while conducting monitoring along Fourmile Creek!

Painted turtles are native across much of North America and prefer ponds, wetlands, and slow flowing creeks. They eat a variety of aquatic species including insects, fish, tadpoles, algae, and aquatic plants.

During winter they bury themselves in the mud where they hibernate, surviving without oxygen for several months.

Do you know a student who has experienced Wheat Week with our education team? Let us know what they learned!

Registration is now open for fourth- and fifth-grade classrooms to host Wheat Week for the 2026-27 school year. Wheat Week is delivered over the course of one week. It includes hands-on lessons that educate students about agriculture, systems, water, soil, conservation, DNA, energy, and most prominently: wheat!

PCD educators are now scheduling classroom visits in Whitman and Asotin Counties thanks to funding from Asotin County Stormwater, the Washington Grain Commission, and Franklin Conservation District.
