A New York court has imposed its maximum punishment on Precious Arzuaga for her role in the killing of Sam Nordquist, a 24-year-old transgender man from Minnesota. Arzuaga, 40, was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without parole after previously pleading guilty to 11 charges, including first-degree murder, kidnapping and aggravated sexual abuse.
Investigators said Nordquist traveled to New York in September 2024 after meeting Arzuaga online and developing romantic feelings for her. Authorities said he was later held against his will at a motel in Hopewell, where he endured weeks of physical, sexual and psychological abuse. His remains were eventually discovered in a field in Yates County in February 2025.
During sentencing, prosecutors presented evidence describing Arzuaga as the person who orchestrated the abuse. Nordquist’s mother and sister also addressed the court, sharing memories of him and describing the lasting impact of his death. Arzuaga apologized to the family and said she would accept her punishment.
Jennifer Quijano, another defendant, was also sentenced to life without parole. Two additional defendants have pleaded guilty, while three others have pleaded not guilty and are expected to face separate trials. Authorities have previously said they found no evidence supporting hate-crime charges. What are your thoughts on the sentences in this case?
