This week, our paramedics had the opportunity to get some hands-on training with our new GlideScopes!

For those who may not be familiar, a GlideScope is a video laryngoscope that helps our paramedics place breathing tubes in patients who are unable to breathe adequately on their own. Unlike traditional methods, which require a direct view of the airway, the GlideScope uses a small camera to display a magnified view of the patient’s airway on a screen. This improved visibility can make it easier to guide a breathing tube into the correct position, especially in patients with difficult airways. Ultimately, this technology helps our paramedics perform critical, lifesaving procedures more effectively and with greater confidence.

Our paramedics have an extensive scope of practice, allowing them to provide advanced medical care during some of the most serious emergencies. Having the right equipment, along with the training to use it effectively, helps us continue providing high-quality care when our community needs it most.

At Columbia EMS, our providers are dedicated to bringing the best possible care directly to our patients, whether that’s in their homes, at work, or wherever an emergency may happen.

We’re proud to continue investing in the equipment, training, and skills that help us better serve our community.

October Responder Rundown: Meet Cesar!

This month, we’re excited to introduce you to Cesar!

Cesar has been part of the Columbia EMS family for five years. While he’s now a full-time firefighter, he still makes time to pick up shifts with us, and we’re always happy to have him back!

When we asked Cesar what he enjoys most about working in EMS, his answer was helping bridge the gap in healthcare for our Hispanic community.

He says, it’s about making sure everyone in our community receives the best care possible. Being able to break down language barriers helps patients feel more comfortable, improves communication, and allows our crews to better care for the people we serve.

Of course, we couldn’t highlight Cesar without asking his coworkers what they enjoy most about working with him. The answer? His positive attitude and as you can tell by the photo, his unbeatable sense of humor! Cesar has a way of keeping spirits high, bringing people together, and making even the longest shifts a little more enjoyable.

We’re lucky to have Cesar as part of our team and appreciate everything he brings to Columbia EMS and the communities we serve!

Help us show Cesar some love in the comments!

Did you know this week is Fire Prevention Week?

With colder weather on the way, now is a great time to take a few minutes to make sure your home and family are prepared!

Check your smoke alarms. If they’re over 10 years old, it’s time to replace them.

Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that could catch fire, and never plug them into extension cords or power strips.

Never leave cooking food unattended.

Have a family escape plan and practice it at least twice a year.

A few simple steps can make a big difference in preventing a fire or keeping your family safe if one happens.

Your local Columbia EMS crews had a great opportunity to work with Quincy High School’s EMT class this week!

One of the most rewarding parts of EMS is having the opportunity to share our knowledge and experience with the next generation of providers. These students are taking an exciting first step toward serving their communities, and we’re proud to play a small part in their journey.

They’re a great group of students, and we wish them all the best as they continue their EMT education and begin their own adventures in EMS.

At Columbia EMS, serving our community also means investing in its future and supporting the next generation who will one day answer the call.

October marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Did you know that about 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer during their lifetime?

While not all breast cancers can be prevented, there are steps we can all take to help reduce our risk. Healthy habits like staying physically active, avoiding to***co, maintaining a healthy weight, and limiting alcohol can make a difference.

Early detection is also important. Mammograms can help find breast cancer early, sometimes before there are any noticeable signs or symptoms.

This October, we encourage the women in our community to talk with their healthcare provider about their individual risk factors and when breast cancer screening and mammograms are right for them.

Take care of yourselves, ladies. Stay healthy, stay strong, and help spread awareness.

What a great day celebrating our community! 💙🧩

Our Columbia EMS crew had a wonderful time at the Grant County Autism Community Acceptance Day, meeting families, making new friends, and spending time with the people we’re proud to serve.

For us, community involvement is an important part of being prepared. Every person we meet is unique, and that means the care we provide can’t always take a one-size-fits-all approach. Understanding how to recognize and accommodate different communication, sensory, and individual needs, helps our crews provide compassionate and respectful care when it matters most.

But preparedness starts long before an emergency happens. Being present at events like this allows our crews and community members to get to know one another, build trust, and hopefully make the sight of emergency vehicles or first responders a little more familiar if our paths ever cross during an emergency.

Thank you to everyone who welcomed us and stopped by to spend some time with our crew. We loved being there!

Today, we gathered to remember a day that forever changed our nation September 11, 2001. May we never forget the lives that were lost, the families forever changed, or the extraordinary courage shown on September 11, 2001. May we always remember the enduring lessons of that day—that service to others is one of humanity’s greatest gifts, that courage shines brightest in our darkest moments, and that we are strongest when we stand together. Twenty-five years later, we remember, we honor, and we never forget.
