Since 1988, the Seneca Area Fire Protection District has served our community without a tax increase. During that time, however, the demands placed on the fire district—and the cost of meeting those demands—have changed dramatically.
In just the last 10 years, our call volume has more than doubled, increasing from 320 calls in 2015 to 741 calls in 2025. Those calls include fires, medical emergencies, traffic accidents, natural disasters, fire alarms, and other situations where our community depends on trained firefighters and reliable equipment.
At the same time, the cost of providing emergency services has risen significantly. For example, a fire engine that cost approximately $400,000 in 2020 can cost around $1.3 million today. The cost of protective clothing, breathing equipment, radios, helmets, boots, and other essential equipment has increased as well.
The additional revenue being requested would help the district address four major needs: staffing, equipment and vehicles, training, and aging buildings and infrastructure. The goal is to make sure the district has the people, equipment, training, and facilities necessary to continue serving more than 93 square miles as emergency calls and operating costs increase.
For nearly four decades, the district has operated without a tax increase. Proposition 2 gives residents the opportunity to decide whether additional funding should be provided to meet the district’s current and future needs. Under Missouri law, an additional fire-protection-district property-tax levy requires voter approval.
