Domestic Violence Awareness Month
“Why don't they just leave?”
It's a question we hear far too often. But perhaps we should be asking a different question:
“What makes leaving so difficult?”
Domestic violence isn't always as simple as walking out the door. For many survivors, leaving can be the most dangerous time in an abusive relationship.
-Fear of retaliation or further violence.
-Financial dependence or lack of housing.
-Threats involving children, family members, or pets.
-Emotional manipulation, isolation, and control.
-Hope that the person they love will change.
-Fear that no one will believe them.
Abuse doesn't always leave visible bruises. Sometimes it leaves someone questioning their worth, their judgment, and whether they can survive on their own.
Instead of asking why someone stays, let's ask how we can help them feel safe enough to seek support.
Survivors don't need judgment. They need compassion, resources, safety, and someone willing to listen.
- You don't have to understand someone's decision to respect their journey.
The Radford City Victim/Witness Assistance Program stands with survivors of domestic violence. Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported.
