Please join us on Monday, Nov. 16 from 12-1 p.m. in Room 125, Speakers’ Corner, Falvey Library at Vic Maggitti Hall, for a talk by Joseph Lennon, Associate Dean, CLAS and Jonathan O’Neil, Irish Studies, CLAS, on “Sustainability in Irish Arts and Culture.”
What does "sustainability" mean in and for Irish culture? This talk introduces Sustainability in Irish Culture, a special issue of the American Journal of Irish Studies that brings together scholars working across literary studies, linguistics, environmental humanities, and postcolonial theory to examine how questions of ecological sustainability intersect with Irish cultural, linguistic, and political life. The essays range from the Irish-language literary tradition to critiques of sustainability discourse. Together the issue presents Irish culture's distinctive vantage point from which we may rethink the relationship between environmental crisis and cultural survival. In this talk, we survey the issues and arguments at the heart of the collection, consider what Irish studies can contribute to the wider conversation about sustainability in the humanities, and reflect on the editorial process of assembling work that is both locally rooted and globally engaged.
This series is co-sponsored by the Strategic Initiative for Climate, Justice, and Sustainability and Falvey Library and is free and open to the public.
