📖🔤 HAPPY NATIONAL DICTIONARY DAY! 🔤📖

Today, October 16, we’re celebrating the wonderful world of words!

National Dictionary Day honors the birthday of Noah Webster (1758–1843), the American lexicographer whose American Dictionary of the English Language, published in 1828, helped shape American English.

📚 But have you ever wondered how a word actually gets into the dictionary?

Believe it or not, words don’t become official simply because someone invents them!

🔎 Here’s how it works:

✏️ People start using a word. New words often emerge through everyday conversations, technology, popular culture, and changing language.

📖 Dictionary editors take notice. Lexicographers study how words are used in books, newspapers, online publications, and everyday communication.

⏳ The word proves itself. Editors look for evidence that a word has been used consistently, by different people, over a period of time.

📚 It earns an entry! Once there’s enough evidence of established usage, a word may be added to the dictionary.

And here’s a fun fact: Dictionaries don’t decide which words we’re allowed to use. They document the language we’re already using!

🐉📚 HAPPY MYTHS & LEGENDS DAY! 🧚‍♀️✨

Today, October 11, we’re celebrating the magical, mysterious, and sometimes downright terrifying stories that have captured imaginations for centuries!

From Greek gods and Norse mythology to King Arthur, dragons, mermaids, and legendary creatures, myths and legends have been passed down through generations, shaping cultures and inspiring countless books along the way.

📖 But what’s the difference?

⚡ Myths often explain the mysteries of the world, natural events, or the actions of gods and supernatural beings.

🏰 Legends are stories traditionally connected to historical people, places, or events, often blending fact with imagination.

Many of today’s most beloved fantasy stories draw inspiration from these ancient tales, proving that a good story never really grows old!

📚 We want to know: What’s your favorite myth, legend, or legendary creature?

Are you fascinated by Greek mythology? Love a good dragon story? Or perhaps you prefer the mysterious legends of the Pacific Northwest, like Bigfoot? 🌲👣

Share your favorites in the comments!

📚 BANNED BOOKS WEEK: WHERE ARE WE TODAY?

As Banned Books Week 2026 comes to a close, we’ve spent the week looking back at nearly 400 years of book censorship in America—from early banned books to classics once considered controversial, changing forms of censorship, and the creation of Banned Books Week itself.

Because 2026 isn’t over yet, the most recent complete annual figures from the American Library Association are from 2025.

In 2025, ALA documented 4,235 unique titles challenged, the second-highest number it has ever recorded.

📖 The most frequently challenged books of 2025 included:

1. Sold — Patricia McCormick
2. The Perks of Being a Wallflower — Stephen Chbosky
3. Gender Q***r: A Memoir — Maia Kobabe
4. Empire of Storms — Sarah J. Maas
5. Last Night at the Telegraph Club — Malinda Lo (tie)
5. Tricks — Ellen Hopkins (tie)
7. A Court of Thorns and Roses — Sarah J. Maas
8. A Clockwork Orange — Anthony Burgess (tie)
8. Identical — Ellen Hopkins (tie)
8. Looking for Alaska — John Green (tie)
8. Storm and Fury — Jennifer L. Armentrout (tie)

From a book suppressed in colonial America in the 1600s to thousands of titles challenged today, the books may have changed—but conversations about access, censorship, and the freedom to read continue.

Thank you for following along with us this week! ❤️📚
