Protecting State Health Plan members today while securing the Plan’s financial future.

“Members should expect to have the same coverage set by the plan over the summer,” said State Treasurer Brad Briner, who chairs the State Health Plan Board of Trustees.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, Atrium Health will move to the State Health Plan’s out-of-network tier. The decision is expected to save the Plan hundreds of millions of dollars while maintaining member cost-sharing through Atrium Health’s Affordability Program.

What members need to know:

✔️ Members can continue choosing Atrium Health providers.

✔️ Atrium’s Affordability Program is designed to protect members from higher out-of-pocket costs.

✔️ The Plan is taking action to protect benefits and avoid additional financial burdens on teachers, state employees and their families.

Open Enrollment continues through Nov. 6, 2026.

Our priority remains clear: Protecting access to quality health care while ensuring the State Health Plan can continue serving North Carolina’s public servants for years to come.

The extension gives members more time to review information about Atrium Health’s recently announced program and understand what it could mean for their 2027 coverage and costs. Members can use this additional time to review their options and make or update their elections before the new deadline.

Atrium Health’s program does not affect members enrolled in a Humana Medicare Advantage Plan.

The Local Government Commission (LGC) voted to assume financial control of Ronda and Rowland after reviewing the towns’ financial conditions and plans for addressing them. The action is intended to help ensure bills are paid and residents continue receiving needed services.

“The priority is making sure that every citizen in our state is getting the services they need,” said State Treasurer Brad Briner, who chairs the LGC.

The State Health Plan (SHP) remains committed to protecting members and ensuring a sustainable future for North Carolina's health benefits.

SHP raises concerns about Atrium Health’s new "program" for Plan members. It's a shell game that shifts costs to the Plan and North Carolina taxpayers.

The Plan is reviewing the program’s impact, risks and legality. Read the full statement: https://bit.ly/4dTOEt6
