A bit of DHFD history from fire historian Legeros Fire Line
Evening history. Wake County. This was the first fire truck of the Durham Highway Fire Department, a 1960 Army surplus "deuce-and-a-half" that the volunteer firefighters converted into a pumper-tanker.
Equipped with a front-mounted 150 GPM pump and a 1,500-gallon tank, it carried 150 feet of one-inch hose.
It was originally housed in a two-bay metal building on Davis Circle, off of the "Durham Highway" aka Highway 70 or Glenwood Avenue.
And was soon joined by a 1965 Chevy/Darley pumper, 500/500, that was purchased new. It was Unit 1, and the picture below was Unit 2.
This picture was taken on April 13, 1966, at a training fire at an abandoned house "just off the Leesville Highway behind Brookhaven."
It was part of a 12-hour training program attended by 22 volunteer firefighters and sponsored by W. W. Holding Industrial Center.
Believe Raleigh Times photographer Martin Rogers took the photo.
