Governor Morehead School This is the official Governor Morehead School page managed by the Education Services for the Deaf and Blind at the North Department of Public Instruction.

The school provided services to children from 5 to 21 years of age until 1987, at which time the Governor Morehead Preschool program extended the services to children, ages birth through 4 years of age, throughout the state. In the past decade, the school's role has expanded to serve school aged children in their home communities. Through the outreach program, initiated in 1993, local education agencies across the state can refer visually impaired students to the GMS. These specialized services, per local school system request, are provided in the child's local school system. Services were made available to students for whom their local school systems determined the need for short term training in the expanded core curriculum in 1996. This training is variable in length (typically 1-2 weeks) and provided on the GMS campus.

GMS Spirit Week Is Here — Let’s Bring the Energy!

Spirit Week kicks off Monday, October 19th – Thursday, October 22nd! Let’s keep the energy high by reminding our students and joining in the fun ourselves! Each day is a chance to celebrate school spirit, creativity, and community, so pull out your gear, grab a buddy, and let’s make this the most spirited week yet!

Here’s what’s coming up:

🏈 Oct 19th (Monday): Team Spirit Day – Let’s go, team! Rep your favorite team with jerseys, hats, or fan gear galore!

🛌 Oct 20th (Tuesday): Pajama Day – Who says cozy can’t be classy? Roll out of bed and head to class in your favorite PJs!

🧦 Oct 21st (Wednesday): Crazy Sock Day – Some people wear their emotions on their sleeves — we wear them on our feet! Rock your wildest, wackiest socks and strut your style!

💙💛 Oct 22nd (Thursday): Homecoming Spirit Day – Let’s end Spirit Week with a CHARGE! You can wear your GMS blue and gold, but as you know, the big reveal is here for our new school name and mascot! So get loud as we celebrate Homecoming and cheer on our Athletes!

Here's the truth: Students don't just follow rules; they follow energy! When they see us having fun and celebrating together, they want in! Let's build a culture of pride, joy, and togetherness that makes every student feel like they belong to something special!

This week is our chance to create memories that'll last a lifetime, so let's make it COUNT!

From the front to the back, let's show up and show OUT!!! ONE SCHOOL. MANY STORIES. ONE FAMILY. ONE CHARGE!

Go Chargers, well, for now …to be continued👀

Help!

Good morning, GMS Family,

As we look forward to our upcoming Homecoming Dance on October 22, we would love for us to come together as a family to help make this event extra special for our students.

If you are able, we ask for your support in purchasing or donating items for the dance. Any contribution, big or small, is truly appreciated and will help us create a fun, festive, and memorable evening for our students. Please note that all donated items must be store-bought.

Below is the sign-up sheet for requested items. Please review it and sign up by October 19th so we can get a better idea of what items will be provided and finalize everything in time for the event.

Thank you all so much for your kindness, generosity, and willingness to help make Homecoming a special experience for our students. Your support truly means a lot.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Jocelyn Russell

Flashback!! How We Got Here

Our educators stepped away from the lesson plans and support services for off-campus team-building adventures.

From trivia to singing to laughing, it was the perfect reminder that the best teams don't just work together—they grow together.

We recharged our batteries, shared a ton of laughs, and headed back to campus that afternoon ready to work!

Join us at Season of Giving: Building Community. Creating Opportunity for youth with visual impairments and blindness across NC!

The Governor Morehead Foundation invites you to be part of a powerful mission: opening doors of opportunity for youth who are blind or visually impaired across all 100 counties of North Carolina.

For more than 175 years, the only School in North Carolina for the Blind, here in Raleigh, has been a place where students not only learn academics but also gain confidence, independence, and life-changing experiences. Today, the Foundation continues that legacy by funding education, equipment, technology, enrichment programs, and unforgettable experiences that empower students to thrive in every aspect of life.

This fundraiser isn’t just an event—it’s your chance to help unlock potential. Whether it’s providing adaptive technology for a classroom, supporting employment training opportunities, ensuring every student can explore the world beyond campus, or providing music equipment, your presence makes it possible!

Expect an evening filled with inspiration, community, and purpose—and know that every dollar raised goes directly to support students who deserve the same opportunities as their peers across North Carolina.

There will be a silent auction, buffet dinner from the Food Hall’s favorites, a cash bar, music, and community!

Tickets are $55 per person and includes a complimentary b**r or w**e and buffet dinner: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/season-of-giving-2026-tickets-1996407505591
