We asked Bynum Walter, Assistant Director of the City Planning division, a couple of questions about planning.

Q: Describe a city or project that has inspired your work (can be local or abroad).
A: A project that has inspired me is the transformation of the National Mall. It helps me remember that a well-organized plan can take a long time to become reality.

Q: Why does planning matter for Raleigh’s future?
A: Planning matters today because our community of 500,000 is on its way to 750,000 by 2050.

Lauryn is a Park Planner with Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department.

Q: What planning idea or innovation excites you right now?
A: One planning innovation I’m really excited about is universal design. It’s about creating spaces that work for everyone, regardless of ability, gender, age, race, or economic background.

Q: What’s one planning win you’re proud of?
A: One planning win I’m especially proud of is the redesign and reopening of Caraleigh Park in Summer 2026. It’s been exciting to help bring new life to a beloved neighborhood space. https://bit.ly/4rRbHKW
