In this week's Into the Archives, we look at a touching letter from Eliza Haywood to John Haywood while she was staying with her parents in Wilmington in 1800. She reports on baby Betsy's weaning, new teeth, and first words.

The letter's tone is fond and familiar, painting a picture of a happily newly married couple and a mother's love for her young firstborn.

There are more gems like this letter in the Haywood Family archives at UNC Chapel Hill's Wilson Special Collections Library.

In this week's In the Archives, we're taking a look at an account book in the John Haywood papers at UNC Chapel Hill's Wilson Special Collections Library.

This book belonged to Martha H. Haywood, who was born in 1872 to Joseph and Mary Haywood. Her grandfather was Fabius Haywood, making her John Haywood's great-granddaughter. She never married and lived with her younger sister Elsie her whole life.

However, in her 1902-1903 account book, there's also the draft of a romance novel amongst the pages. It's fascinating to imagine the thirty-year-old Martha H. Haywood penning her book amongst the household accounts.

Today, we’re launching a new series called Into the Archives. We’ll take a look at some Haywood (and Haywood adjacent) papers in archives around North Carolina.

Today, we’re looking at a 1820-1821 housekeeping memoranda book written in by Eliza Haywood when she was mistress of Haywood Hall. Note that she bought “red lead for hearth paint”!

What sort of thing would you like to see from the archives?

Haywood Hall has had many owners since it was first built in 1799, but all of them have been members of the Haywood family until the house was given to the Colonial Dames of America in the State of North Carolina in 1977.

Which era of Haywood Hall would you like to learn more about?
