h/t Life on the Spectrum

Many families never hear about this.
Students with an intellectual disability can get federal student aid for college through an approved Comprehensive Transition and Postsecondary (CTP) program. That includes many autistic students who also have an intellectual disability.

What it can include:
• Federal Pell Grants
• FSEOG grants ($100 to $4,000 a year)
• Federal Work-Study
None of it is a loan. It doesn’t have to be paid back.

How to get it:
1. Find an approved CTP program in Think College’s directory at thinkcollege.net
2. Fill in the FAFSA. No high school diploma or GED needed.
3. The college’s financial aid office works out the package
Grants may not cover the full cost, and the student must have left high school.

Federal student loans aren’t included.
Is your family starting to think about life after high school?

h/t The You Look Fine Club.

The You Look Fine Method™ | Everything Counts.
When you live with chronic illness, it is easy to measure your day by everything you did not get done.

The laundry is still there. The emails are unanswered. The plans you made might not happen. And somewhere along the way, you can start believing that what you managed to do was not enough.

But what if we stopped measuring our days by what we had left to give?
The You Look Fine Method™ is a simple way to recognize invisible effort, reduce guilt, and credit yourself for what your body and mind had to navigate.
The Method has three steps:

1. Notice what you did today. The everyday things count, including showering, answering an email, making supper, attending an appointment, or resting when your body needed it.

2. Recognize the invisible effort. Other people might see a grocery trip. You know about the pain you managed, the fatigue you pushed through, the brain fog you navigated, and the recovery you needed afterward.

3. Let the list be enough. No scoring. No productivity targets. No gold stars. A three-item day is not a failure. The list exists to reduce guilt, not create more pressure.

This is not about doing more. It is about recognizing the effort that was already there, because you do not have to accomplish more to make your effort count.

SAVE this carousel so you can return to the Method on the days when you need the reminder.

SHARE it with someone living with chronic illness who needs to hear that their effort counts, even when other people cannot see it.

Don't skip the worksheet slide. Save the carousel and print out the worksheet so you can fill in what you physically did and the invisible effort it took. Use it to help recognize the parts of your day that might otherwise go unacknowledged.

A reminder from The You Look Fine Club:
Everything counts. Even the things nobody else sees.

The goal of the HOPE NC pilot housing programs is to demonstrate the different ways people with disabilities can live independently while also receiving support through services and their peers. For many adults with disabilities, the default options have been to live in congregate settings or in their childhood homes; neither offers much chance to be independent. HOPE NC

Oct 15 White Cane Awareness Day

WHAT IS A WHITE CANE? A white cane is an important mobility tool that helps many blind people and people with low vision navigate their surroundings, detect obstacles, and travel independently.

Independence looks different for everyone. People who are blind or have low vision use different tools and techniques to navigate the world. A white cane is one way to support mobility, autonomy, and access to everyday life.

How can you be respectful?
Ask before offering assistance.
Never grab someone or their cane.
Speak directly to the person, not just their companion.
Respect each person's independence and choices.

Accessibility is everyone's responsibility. Keep sidewalks and pathways clear, respect accessible pedestrian spaces, and support communities where people with disabilities can travel safely and participate fully.

Celebrate access.
Respect independence.

This White Cane Awareness Day, help spread awareness about blindness, mobility, and the importance of equal access.

Accessibility benefits everyone.
