SBI Assisting Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office with Homicide and Assault

At the request of Montgomery County Sheriff Pete Herron, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is investigating a homicide and assault on law enforcement officers in Candor, NC.

On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, SBI agents responded to a standoff between law enforcement and a person identified as Lorzeno Dumas at 121 Wiley Drive in Candor.

Tactical teams from North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement and the Moore County Sheriff’s Office responded, and a standoff followed with the suspect. When the standoff concluded, investigators found Wanda Elaine Dumas deceased in the home. Lorenzo Dumas was alive and suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Mr. Dumas has now been charged with the following crimes:

-- first-degree murder
-- two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer with a fi***rm

Additional charges may be filed in this case.

Carolyn Creech of Goldston, NC, has been coming to the North Carolina State Fair for 76 consecutive years. She started out going with her family to show their cows.

She stopped by the SBI booth today and gave our special agents a history lesson on decades of fair fun. We were glad to have her visit.

Arrest Made in Kinston Shooting Investigation

On October 3, 2026, the Kinston Police Department responded to the 900 block of E. Highland Avenue regarding a shooting that left 29-year-old Marvelous Foy Jr. suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

On October 21, 2026, KPD’s SWAT Team, along with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), took Zyquan Lewis (26) into custody in connection with this incident.

Lewis was booked into the Lenoir County Jail on the following charges:

* Attempted Murder
* Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury
* Possession of a Fi***rm by a Felon
* Discharging a Fi***rm into Occupied Property to Incite Fear
* Breaking and Entering to Terrorize
* Assault on a Female (2 Counts)
* Misdemeanor Crime of Domestic Violence (2 Counts)
* Injury to Real Property
* Discharging a Fi***rm Within City Limits

Pembroke Man Charged with Murdering His Four-Month-Old Daughter

(PEMBROKE, N.C.) – The Pembroke Police Department, with assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), has arrested and charged Kashon Malik Priest, 28, with murder in the death of four-month-old Katelynn Michelle Priest.

On May 5, the Pembroke Police Department responded to a report of suspected child abuse injuries to the child. She had been transported to UNC Health Southeastern and later airlifted to UNC Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Katelynn remained at the hospital and died on May 15.

The child was taken to the NC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy. On May 19, the Pembroke Police Department asked the SBI to assist with the investigation.

Priest is now charged with one count of murder. He is being held without bond at the Robeson County Detention Center.

(GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C.) – The Guilford County Sheriff's Office has requested assistance from the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) with an officer-involved shooting that happened last night.

At about 9:30 p.m., Guilford County deputies responded to 6874 Kimesville Road in Liberty, NC. Two deputies were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The citizen was pronounced deceased at the scene and has been identified as Jeremy Dean Wood (DOB 11/23/1979).

HELP US FIND LESLIE JO GRISSOM

The SBI is asking for the public’s help in a 2007 missing person case from Vance County.

Leslie Jo Grissom, a white female born November 20, 1987, was last seen on July 8, 2007. A neighbor saw her with a man near 3985 Weldons Mill Road in Henderson. She was 19 years old at that time.

The Vance County Sheriff’s Office requested the SBI to assist with the case in June of last year. SBI agents are actively searching areas of interest and following up on information in the case.

If you know anything about Leslie’s disappearance or where she may be, please contact the SBI at 919-662-4500 or the Vance County Sheriff’s Office immediately. We are working to secure funds for a reward in this case.

SBI releases New Information in Martin County Officer-Involved Shooting

Yesterday, Oct. 15, the Martin County Sheriff's Office, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the Martin County District Attorney made concurrent requests to the State Bureau of Investigation regarding an investigation into an officer-involved shooting in Martin County. The SBI is the lead agency for the investigation.

The man involved has been identified as James Asa Hardison. His body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy. When completed, the SBI will send the case file to the district attorney for review.

No additional information is available at this time. The SBI will provide updates as appropriate.

(GREENE COUNTY, N.C.) -- The Greene County Sheriff's Office requested the NC State Bureau of Investigation for assistance with a series of events yesterday near Maury Correctional Institution. The incident began around 11:20 a.m. As a result, the SBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting.

SBI crime scene agents and agents from our Capital and Northeastern Districts have been collecting evidence and conducting interviews.

We are now confirming that the citizen who was shot is deceased. He has been taken to the NC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

No additional information is available at this time.
