North Carolina Community Health Center Association The North Carolina Community Health Center Association (NCCHCA) is a private, non-profit membership a

Formed in 1978 by the leadership of community health centers, NCCHCA is comprised of membership from each of the 39 health center grantees, 3 Look-alike organizations, and other partners. These health center grantees and Look-alikes operate over 270 clinical sites and served nearly 600,000 patients in 2018. The North Carolina Community Health Center Association was created to advance the common mission of health centers across the state. NCCHCA represents the interests of North Carolina’s health centers to federal, state, and local agencies and officials. The Association also seeks support from foundations, corporations, and other private entities to increase access to primary health care for all North Carolinians. NCCHCA’s staff serves on state and national coalitions and task forces to foster collaboration, leverage resources, and avoid duplication of services. NCCHCA is a valuable resource to health centers, providing training and technical assistance in areas such as clinical service delivery, governance, workforce development, and administration. NCCHCA regularly presents workshops, trainings, and conferences to keep health center staff on the cutting edge of effective and cost-efficient service delivery. The Association consistently analyzes key issues facing health centers and provides our members with critical information in a timely fashion. In addition, the Association helps communities to create new health centers or expand existing ones.

NCCHCA--in partnership with Dr. Shannon Dowler / Nurture NC and with generous funding from The Leon Levine Foundation--this week has awarded more than $1 million to six North Carolina community health centers to combat maternity deserts, as part of our new PATCH-NC initiative.

According to a NC Department of Health and Human Services report release a few days ago, 87.2% of recent pregnancy-related deaths were preventable. One of the greatest challenges to improving the health of North Carolina’s rural moms and newborns is early-and-often access to prenatal and postpartum care.

The following awarded community health centers will begin delivering prenatal care in rural areas where such care does not exist, spanning 11 North Carolina counties:

• Black River Health Services, Inc.
• Blue Ridge Health
• The C. W. Williams Community Health Center, Inc.
• Contentnea Health
• Kinston Health
• Person Family Medical & Dental Centers

Thank you to TLLF for its generous funding, to Dr. Dowler and Nurture NC for their partnership, and to community health centers, which invest each day delivering accessible, affordable, high-quality medical care to populations that need it most--including those who aren't always seen or heard.

Today, our colleague Brendan Riley is attending a fascinating event led by North Carolina Institute of Medicine.

In the photo below, NeighborHealth Center CMO Matt Oettinger, MD, MBA, FAAFP is a panelist during a plenary session about the use of data in health care. He made insightful comments about the need to democratize data analytics tools to enable community health centers to fully adopt them while remaining independent, mission-driven, and patient-governed providers.

An inspiring acquisition for AxcessPoint Health Systems, cementing a four-year partnership to expand access to health care.

AxcessPointe Health System is expanding access to care across Mecklenburg County.

We’re proud to welcome Shelter Health Services into the APHS network, building on a partnership that began in 2022 and strengthening our shared commitment to providing accessible, compassionate care to the communities we serve.

Together, we’re creating more opportunities to connect individuals and families with the care they need, where they need it most.

NCCHCA's Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Initiative (MAAI) addresses a critical shortage in one of the most important frontline roles in North Carolina's community health centers. Medical Assistants support vital clinical, administrative, and care coordination functions while simultaneously enabling providers to serve more patients and improve bottom lines.

As a result, MAAI is a win for health centers and a win for their patients and communities.

MAAI also is a win for the dozens of Medical Assistants who have graduated from our program and been deployed to health centers across our state. Each graduate has completed approximately 2,000 hours of paid clinical / on-the-job training, plus approximately 200 hours of didactic instruction. NCCHCA and participating NC health centers support them in their career development every step of the way.

Congratulations to our MAAI recent graduates, and thank you to all participating health centers, including those working with our recent graduates: Agape Health Services, Appalachian Mountain Health, Lincoln Community Health Center, Inc, MedNorth Health Center, and Piedmont Health Services.

If you have a few minutes today--or any day--please watch this brief video. It's a testament to the resilience of High Country Community Health and its surrounding communities in the face of extraordinary adversity. It highlights how strong leadership, shared organizational values, and purpose-driven work embody the spirit of North Carolina's community health centers.
