Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family, friends and fellow firefighters of Andrew Brokes as they prepare to lay their beloved son, brother and fellow firefighter to rest.

The loss of one of our own is felt throughout the entire fire service. We stand with the Durham Fire Department and the Burlington community as they honor Andrew’s life, service and the impact he made on those around him.

Our beloved firefighter, son, and brother, Andrew Brokes, will be put to rest this upcoming weekend at his hometown in Burlington, NC.

The family will be holding a visitation on Friday, October 16 beginning at 4PM at the Lamb’s Chapel. The funeral service will be held the following day at 4PM.

The public is welcome to join as we remember the life of one of Durham’s Bravest.

Day 5: Find the Fire Hazards
On the last day of fire prevention week, look around and ask yourself: What could start a fire?

Parents and educators, here are 6 quick signs you should look for when fireproofing a home:

• Extension cords: Are they damaged, overloaded, or being used where they shouldn't be?
• Charging devices: Are phones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, or other devices charging safely?
• Cooking: Are towels, paper products, or other things that can burn too close to the stove?
• Heating equipment: Are heaters kept away from furniture, curtains, and other things that can burn?
• Candles: Are they being used safely and kept away from anything that can burn?
• A few minutes spent identifying hazards can help prevent a fire before it starts.

Additionally, teach others to always keep their doors closed. Closing your bedroom door while you sleep can help slow the spread of fire and smoke, giving you more time to escape.

As Fire Prevention Week comes to a close, don't just talk about fire safety. Take Action, protect your home, and protect your family!

Yesterday, We Celebrated National Junior Fire Marshal Day! 🔥🚒 NC OSFM is excited to showcase Discovery Education and The Hartford as they work to bring fire safety education to students across the state. National Junior Fire Marshal Day 2026 reached TK through 3rd grade classrooms with a free, engaging virtual learning experience designed specifically for young learners.

Students learned critical fire safety skills:

✔️ Why matches and lighters are for adults only
✔️ The importance of working smoke alarms
✔️ How to create and practice a home fire escape plan
✔️ How to identify a safe family meeting place during an emergency

Teachers, Parents, and Community Members:

The program is still available to use in your classrooms and at home. Access the full video, educator guides, and Junior Fire Marshal Program materials on the program website or on YouTube (link in the comments below).

Fire safety education starts young. And it starts with resources like this.

Share this with your schools, families, and communities. Every young fire marshal matters.

State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor and the OSFM team are on scene working alongside local, state and federal agencies to provide support and assistance to the Durham Fire Department following a tragic fire that claimed the life of one firefighter and injured two others. The loss of a firefighter is felt deeply across the entire fire service. Please continue to keep the Durham Fire Department, the family of the firefighter who lost their life, the two injured firefighters, and all of their loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.

5 Things you should look out for in your fire escape plan:
🔥 It's Fire Prevention Week Day 4! You know your household's escape plan, but have you rehearsed it properly?

Gather everyone in your household and practice your fire safety escape plan to familiarize everyone. When you do, make a simple checklist including these 5 things you should look out for:

1. Can everyone get outside quickly?
2. Does everyone know at least two ways out?
3. Does everyone know what to do if a door is hot?
4. Does your escape plan accommodate children, older adults, or anyone who may need additional assistance?
5. Does everyone know where to meet outside?

Ensure your practice maintains a sense of urgency within the household, without creating a real fire or unsafe conditions. Follow NC OSFM for further updates on how to improve fire safety within your home!

Fire Prevention Week is officially underway!

Yesterday, the Greensboro Fire Department invited NC OSFM to join them at Jones Elementary School as they kicked off Fire Prevention Week with students.

This year’s theme, “Charge into Safety: Lithium-Ion Battery Safety,” focuses on the importance of safely charging and using lithium-ion batteries—and the Greensboro team definitely brought the theme to life!

Greensboro Fire personnel dressed the part and helped make an important fire-safety message fun and engaging for the students, teaching them about the potential dangers of lithium-ion batteries and what they can do to charge safely.

And, of course, who better to help kick off Fire Prevention Week than the one and only Sparky the Fire Dog!

A big THANK YOU to Greensboro Fire Department and Jones Elementary School for inviting NC OSFM to be part of such a great event. Events like this are a great reminder that teaching fire safety to our youngest community members can make a lasting impact.

Stay safe. Charge safe. Be a fire-safety superhero!
