Congratulations to Col. James W. Smith, awarded the Order of the Marchaussee (Silver) in San Diego, Calif., Jan. 31, 2026, one of the highest honors in the Military Police Corps.

For over 20 years, Col. Smith has exemplified professionalism and selfless service. He has commanded at every level of Military Police leadership, including the 870th MP Company, 1st Battalion (MP), and the 49th Military Police Brigade. Across three combat deployments to Afghanistan, his courage earned the Bronze Star Medal and the Army Commendation Medal
with “V” Device for Valor.

The Order of the Marchaussee honors exceptional service to the military police corps and those who uphold its highest traditions. Col. Smith’s career reflects that standard in every measure.

The California Army National Guard hosted their annual Best Warrior Competition at Camp San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay, Calif., on Nov. 18-20, 2025. Competitors representing brigades across the state challenged themselves through a series of obstacles that include navigating rough terrain, shooting weapons under heavy stress, ruck marches, agility courses, and more.

The top junior enlisted and noncommissioned officer will represent the state at the Region VII Best Warrior Competition.
