Today, we recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day and honor the history, cultures, traditions and continuing presence of the Indigenous peoples who have called this region home since time immemorial.
Long before Spanish colonization, Indigenous communities lived throughout the region now encompassing portions of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Colonization profoundly disrupted their lives, cultures and relationships to the land.
The land now known as Rancho Cucamonga carries the connected histories of the Kizh people and the Maara’yam, or Serrano, people. The Kizh people have an enduring connection to this region. The Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation, a Maara’yam (Serrano) people, also identifies this area as part of Serrano ancestral territory.
The City of Rancho Cucamonga honors the enduring cultures, traditions and contributions of the Kizh and Serrano peoples, including the Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation. In recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ Day and our core value of equitable prosperity for all people, we reaffirm our commitment to inclusion, cultural diversity and building a community where all people feel welcome.
