Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle Strengthening our community through adult literacy in Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan counties. It’s never too late to learn!

Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle (LVEP) has been serving adults in Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan Counties of West Virginia since 1982. LVEP provides tutoring services for Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) to adults living in the Eastern Panhandle. These services are provided free of charge by dedicated volunteer tutors trained in accordance with the standards set by Literacy West Virginia and Pro-Literacy America. Through one-on-one or group sessions, LVEP tutors listen to each students’ needs to set goals, such as understanding written directions for medications, filling out job applications, managing and maintaining a checkbook, entering a GED program, or reading a book.

Our volunteer instructors help non-native speakers learn or improve their English. Classes are free of charge and available either in person or online!

Our classes cover reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension, and our methodology encourages students to apply what they are learning in realistic settings without overloading them. Some of our students have little or no prior knowledge of English, while others are already proficient and want to hone their skills further.

All are welcome, so please get in touch if you are interested in learning more about literacy support or volunteering with LVEP!

Did you know that LVEP volunteers help community members on their journey toward U.S. citizenship through naturalization?

Our volunteers provide free citizenship support, with weekly classes available both in person and via Zoom.

Citizenship volunteers help learners:
• Review whether they meet the requirements to apply
• Stay informed about application costs and wait times
• Build the English skills needed for the naturalization process
• Understand and prepare for the civics test
• Complete the N-400 application

It’s one-on-one support that can make an important and often overwhelming process easier to navigate.

We’re grateful for the volunteers who give their time, knowledge, and encouragement to help members of our community work toward their citizenship goals. 💙

National GED Day is coming up!

September 16 is National GED Day, a nationwide celebration recognizing adult learners working toward their goals, GED graduates and their achievements, and the educators and volunteers who support them along the way.

Every learner’s journey is different, and choosing to continue your education takes courage, determination, and persistence!
As National GED Day approaches, we’re proud to recognize the adult learners in our own community who are working toward their goals, as well as the dedicated volunteers and educators helping them get there.

This September 16, help spread the word and celebrate the accomplishments of adult learners and GED graduates everywhere! 💙

It really does take a village.💙

For more than 40 years, Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle has helped adults in our community build confidence through literacy, language, and learning. But today, those needs extend far beyond reading and writing.

Adults often need support with:

Digital skills & basic computer use
Math
Financial literacy
Community resources
Grant writing
Fundraising

As an all-volunteer nonprofit, we rely on caring people who are willing to share their time, talents, and life experience. You don't have to be a teacher to make a meaningful impact.

If you've ever wanted to help someone gain confidence, reach a goal, or create a brighter future, we'd love to have you on our team.

Learning something new can feel overwhelming, but every small step forward is worth celebrating.
Whether you're working toward earning your GED, improving your English, preparing for U.S. citizenship, or building confidence in reading and writing, you don't have to do it alone.

At Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle, our caring volunteer tutors provide free, one-on-one support to help adults reach their goals at their own pace.

The hardest part is taking the first step.

Thinking about becoming a U.S. citizen?

Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle offers citizenship classes and one-on-one tutoring to help individuals prepare for naturalization. Our volunteers can also assist with the N-400 application process.

Classes are available in both Berkeley and Jefferson Counties, with options for in-person or Zoom instruction.

To apply for naturalization, individuals generally must:
✔️ Be 18 years of age or older
✔️ Have lawful permanent residency (green card holder) for 5 years, or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen
✔️ Demonstrate good moral character (No serious crime record and adherence to tax laws)
✔️ Be able to read and write English and pass a U.S. history and civics exam
✔️ Take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States

We currently have six dedicated volunteers ready to help guide learners through the process.

They set a goal. They stayed committed. They succeeded.

This June, Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan County Adult Learning Centers celebrated a combined 104 students who received their high school equivalency diplomas in the 2025-2026 school year.

Each diploma represents hours of hard work, determination, and the courage to keep going, no matter the obstacles.

Congratulations to our Eastern Panhandle graduates for proving that it's never too late to learn, grow, and achieve something extraordinary. We are incredibly proud of each and every one of you!

We also want to recognize the amazing volunteers who dedicated their time to tutoring, mentoring, encouraging, and supporting these students every step of the way. Your impact reaches far beyond the classroom.

Congratulations, graduates, and thank you, volunteers. Together, you're changing lives and strengthening our community. 💙

Progress doesn't have to be fast to be meaningful.
Every page read, every new word learned, every question asked and every lesson attended.
Small steps add up to life-changing progress.
Whether someone is learning to read, improving English, earning citizenship, or building confidence, every step matters.

At LVEP, we celebrate every milestone.

Learning changes lives.💙

A lot of adults get really good at hiding reading problems. Life taught them early: just adapt. Keep your head down. Don't get caught.
That's why a little kindness goes such a long way. And why programs that actually welcome people, with no shame and no judgment, matter so much.

Asking for help after years of hiding is an extremely brave thing to do.

It's never too late to learn.
