JSFD Captain Preston Franklin and EMT/PIO Mike Johnson were very pleased to be able to attend the SD EMS Association Conference in Sioux Falls over Halloween Weekend. They were joined by JSFD Volunteer and retired RCFD Paramedic TJ Nicolais. TJ is also a past State Vice President of the organization.
The event provides great networking opportunities with other emergency service providers from around the state, as well as continuing education hours which are required for ongoing EMT licensure.
Preston and TJ also participated in the opening ceremony for the banquet, at which members that had died since last years convention were honored.
It's one more part of doing all we can to provide the best level of care to those in our district.

What Fun! JSFD was thrilled with the turnout at this year's Halloween Trunk-or-Treat at Station #1. Thank you to everyone that participated. There were kids and adults in costumes, and it appeared everyone had a great time.
We had great support from our members decorating before and cleaning up afterwards. Thank you Smokey Bear and Sparky for attending again this year! The kids love you!
Special thanks to Mark and Jill Neisius for donating candy, and our Secretary and Event Coordinator Pat Geary for bringing everything together.

👨‍🚒 Fun for all Ages! 👀

For those of you that noticed some extra-curricular activity at Station #2 on Friday, October 23rd, the JSFD Certified Firefighter class was conducting the long-awaited Live Fire Skills Exercise. The event is the culmination of hours of instruction where candidates get to watch the flow path of smoke and flames, feel the intense heat of the fire, and observe the cooling effects of an accurate water stream. They do all of this while crouching near the floor wearing full turnout gear and an SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus). The temperatures above them are untenable, and could literally melt their face-piece. It's the final skill before being tested for certification.
Our class took longer than usual because of busy calendars and conflicting schedules, but everyone persevered to the end. We are grateful to everyone that contributed along the way; our instructors, our fellow volunteers, our families, and our faithful leader, Training Officer Justin Lena.
The video from inside was captured on a TIC (Thermal Imaging Camera) used to find hotspots and locate the heat signature of a hidden fire.
If this video sparks a flame inside you, contact your local volunteer fire department about becoming a member yourself!

For those of you that drive Highway 44 West on a regular basis, you should already be aware of the large number of deer that can be seen along your route of travel, especially after dark.
The Department of Transportation has thoughtfully placed "deer crossing" signs along the roadway, but much like their human counterparts, the deer don't always adhere to the their quadruped crosswalks. Also, they seldom travel alone, so where you see one, always expect more.
The best way to avoid a collision is to adjust your speed to the conditions, and avoid distractions while driving. Don't overdrive your headlights, and watch the ditches for suicidal cervids.
Should you find yourself in need of your fire department due to a motor vehicle accident in our district, of course call 911. We can't help the deer, but we'll be happy to evaluate any human victims.

On Sunday, October 11th at around 11:00 am JSFD received a page for a possible motorcycle accident or medical emergency. Pennington County 911 Dispatchers provided the best information available, but the caller wasn't sure exactly what they had seen. Medic 5 was first on-scene and made contact with the people with the bike. It turns out they were simply lounging off the side of the road after their motorcycle developed a mechanical issue. They were waiting for alternate transportation for themselves and the disabled bike. Medic 5 advised Dispatch and JSFD that all responding units could cancel.
Although there wasn't a problem that Emergency Responders could address, it is still a good reminder that if you see something, say something. We're glad no one was ill or injured.

JSFD was dispatched to a motorcycle vs. car collision near Lindsey Dr and Hwy 44 West at around 6:00 pm on Friday, October 9th. JSFD personnel assisted with initial patient care and traffic operations while the Pennington County Sheriff's Office and South Dakota Highway Patrol conducted an investigation.
RCFD Medic 5 transported one patient with non-life threatening injuries.
We appreciate the cooperation of everyone that traveled safely through the scene while traffic was reduced to one lane.
