‼️The Portage County Sheriff’s Office would like to once again address phone scams: particularly involving failure to appear for Jury Duty‼️

Scammers are impersonating law enforcement personnel, judges, and attorneys through phone calls, emails and text messages claiming a warrant has been issued for your arrest for failure to report for jury duty. These scammers "spoof" their calls to appear they are calling from the Sheriff’s Office, and claim to be an employee of PCSO.

Victims are ordered to pay a fine for failure to appear/warrant or else a Deputy will arrive to arrest them shortly. The scammer demands payment be made by money transfer, gift card, or bitcoin. To up the ante the most recent scammer who claimed to be a"Sgt. Malcolm Dunlop", went so far as to depict an actual court setting, with a" judge and attorney" present via video chat. The local resident being scammed was also threatened not to tell anyone about the interaction, and if they did, they would be arrested as would the person they talked to. This particular scam even requested vehicle information and a mileage report. This scam unfortunately resulted with this local resident losing $9,000 before realizing what had just occurred. Scammers talk quickly and aggressively hoping to give little time to process what is actually happening. Our Detective Bureau is now investigating this recent scam.

IMPORTANT: Neither the Sheriff's Office (or the Court) will demand payment or sensitive information over the phone for missed jury duty, or for an outstanding warrant.

REMEMBER:

🛑 Stop, and Think: Don’t let threats scare you into acting quickly.

🔺 Verify the information: Contact the Portage County Sheriff's Office or your local law enforcement agency directly using official phone numbers—not the ones provided by the caller or message.

☎️ Hang Up: If the caller pressures you for payment or personal information, end the conversation immediately.

‼️ Report the Scam: Contact the Portage County Sheriff's Office at 330-296-5100, option 9 or file a report with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at www.ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

🇺🇸Honoring Those Who Served🇺🇸

The Portage County Sheriff's Office is proud to recognize the inmates who recently provided valuable labor in support of the Veteran's Grave Marker Project.

Through this project, inmates assisted with the installation of grave markers honoring veterans who served our country. Their work helped ensure these veterans’ service and sacrifice are properly recognized and remembered.

We are proud to see this effort provide an opportunity for inmates to give back to the community while helping preserve the dignity and honor owed to those who served.

A special thank you to everyone involved in the Veteran's Grave Marker Project and, most importantly, to the veterans whose service made our freedoms possible.

🇺🇸 We remember. We honor. We thank you. 🇺🇸

‼️ BARRICADED SUSPECT TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN SHALERSVILLE TOWNSHIP ‼️

On September 15, 2026, Deputies with the Portage County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division responded to a residence on Douglas Street in Shalersville Township following a reported assault involving neighbors.

Deputies made contact with the suspect, Cora Beaver, inside the residence. During their investigation, Deputies developed probable cause to arrest Beaver for the reported assault.

While Deputies attempted to communicate with Beaver and take her into custody, she became increasingly agitated, armed herself with a knife, and barricaded herself inside the residence.

Deputies continued communicating with Beaver for more than an hour in an effort to bring the situation to a peaceful conclusion. Despite repeated attempts to gain her cooperation, Beaver refused to exit the residence and surrender.

Due to the circumstances, the Portage County Tactical Response Team (TRT) was activated, and arrest warrants were obtained.

Beaver was repeatedly advised that warrants had been issued for her arrest and was given numerous opportunities to peacefully surrender. After those efforts were unsuccessful, members of TRT entered the residence.

During the apprehension, TRT members utilized less-lethal mu*****ns, and Beaver was safely taken into custody.

Beaver was transported by Mantua-Shalersville Fire Department to University Hospitals Portage Medical Center for evaluation before being transported to the Portage County Justice Center.

Beaver was booked in on charges of:

• Assault
• Resisting Arrest
• Obstructing Official Business

This incident is another example of the patience and professionalism our Deputies and Tactical Response Team members demonstrate when handling potentially dangerous situations. More than an hour was spent attempting to achieve a peaceful surrender before additional measures became necessary.
