🔥 Let’s Kick Off Fire Prevention Week!
October 4–10 is Fire Prevention Week, and this year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”
Lithium-ion batteries power many of the things we use every day, and a few simple habits can help prevent a fire. As we start the week, take a few minutes to check how your family charges and uses rechargeable devices at home.
⚡ Use the right charger. Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. The wrong charger can damage a battery and increase the risk of fire.
⚡ Give devices room to breathe. Charge phones, tablets and other devices on a hard, flat surface such as a table or desk—not on a bed, couch or under a pillow, where heat can build up.
⚡ Know the warning signs. Stop using a device or battery if it becomes very hot, starts to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.
⚡ Unplug when charging is finished. Once a device is fully charged, unplug it rather than leaving it connected longer than necessary.
⚡ Take extra care with larger batteries. E-bikes, scooters and power tools contain larger batteries that store more energy. Charge them outside when possible, and never let a charging device block an exit.
Fire safety is about more than batteries, too. Make sure your smoke alarms are working and that everyone in your home knows how to get out safely if there is a fire.
We’ll be sharing more throughout the week, but this is a good place to start: take a look around your home today and make safe charging part of your routine. 🔋🔥
