The City of Rawlins has proclaimed October 4–10, 2026, as Fire Prevention Week, joining fire departments across the country in encouraging residents to take simple steps that can help prevent fires at home. Vice Mayor Darril Garner signed the proclamation on September 15.
This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on lithium-ion batteries—and the message is especially relevant here at home. A fire in Rawlins this year started by lithium batteries.
And there may be more lithium-ion batteries around your home than you realize! Along with phones, tablets and laptops, rechargeable batteries can be found in wireless earbuds and headphones, smartwatches, power banks, electric toothbrushes, gaming controllers, cordless tools and vacuums, toys, vapes, e-bikes and scooters.
Rawlins Fire Department encourages residents to make safe charging part of their everyday routine:
• Use the charger or cord that came with your device, or one approved by the manufacturer.
• Charge devices on a hard, flat surface—not on a bed, couch or under a pillow.
• Stop using a battery or device if it becomes very hot, swells, smokes or develops an unusual smell.
• Unplug devices once they are fully charged.
• Charge larger batteries, including those for e-bikes, scooters and power tools, away from exits and combustible materials.
When a lithium battery reaches the end of its life, don’t put it in the trash! Lithium batteries can be damaged or crushed during garbage collection and processing, creating another fire risk. Lithium batteries are accepted at no charge at the Rawlins Landfill, 3001 E. Gun Club Road.
Fire Prevention Week is also a good time to review your family’s fire escape plan. Know two ways out of each room, make sure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working, choose a meeting place outside and practice your plan so everyone knows what to do if an alarm sounds.
Thank you to Rawlins Fire Department and all of our first responders for the work they do throughout the year to prevent fires, educate our community and help keep Rawlins safe.
