We use the phrase “survivor-centered” a lot. But what does that actually mean?
It means we listen.
It means we give someone information and options without telling them what they “should” do.
It means recognizing that someone’s decisions about safety may involve much more than themselves. Children. Housing. Money. Transportation. A dog who is their best friend. Horses they’re responsible for. Livestock. A cat an abusive partner has threatened before.
Those things matter.
Survivor-centered support means understanding the whole picture instead of deciding for someone else what they should do or when they should do it.
A survivor can leave, stay, report, not report, ask questions, change their mind, or simply talk to someone without being pushed toward a decision.
Our job is to make sure survivors have information, support, and choices.
Survivors are the experts on their own lives.
