With El Niño potentially bringing wetter conditions to California, now is the time to prepare for possible flooding.

Here are 6 ways to stay ready:
• Build an emergency go-bag and supply kit.
• Create a family emergency plan.
• Sign up for local emergency alerts.
• Know your evacuation routes.
• Protect important documents and valuables.
• Monitor weather forecasts and official updates.

🚔 CHP Northern Division Retirees' Day! 🚔

CHP Northern Division hosted its 2026 Retirees' Day on October 7th, recognizing the significant contributions and enduring legacy of our retirees. Their continued dedication has shaped and strengthened the mission of the California Highway Patrol.

This event featured updates on new patrol vehicles and the latest departmental technologies, as well as a display of CHP memorabilia. Attendees enjoyed a luncheon, and Chief Andy Poyner expressed appreciation for the vital role retirees have played—and continue to play—in our department’s success. 💙💛

El Niño Weather Advisory! 🌧️

With El Niño bringing the potential for increased rainfall, be prepared for wet weather and possible flooding. Flooded roads are extremely dangerous — just a few inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle away.

Key reminders:
• Slow down and increase following distance.
• Turn on your headlights when your wipers are in use.
• Turn Around, Don't Drown — never drive through flooded roadways.

Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain. If you must travel, use caution and check Caltrans QuickMap for road conditions and closures.

Starting your driving journey or know someone who will be? California Highway Patrol's official Start Smart app provides teen drivers with a step-by-step guide to earning their California driver license, from preparing for the permit to completing required driving hours.

The app also features a driving log, trip tracking, helpful resources, and locations for free Start Smart classes designed to help teens understand the responsibilities that come with being a licensed driver.

It's School Bus Safety Week!

School bus safety starts with all of us. This School Bus Safety Week, the California Highway Patrol reminds drivers to slow down, stay alert, and watch for children getting on and off the bus.

Always remember these important safety tips:
✔️ Stop when a school bus activates its flashing red lights and extends its stop sign.
✔️ Never pass a stopped school bus when its red lights are flashing.
✔️ Watch for children near bus stops, in school zones, and crossing the street.
✔️ Always follow posted speed limits and stay focused behind the wheel.

Every child deserves a safe ride to and from school. Let's do our part to protect our youngest passengers and keep our roads safe.
