Last week, I was officially appointed to the One Safe Place (OSP) Board of Directors.

Established in the 1970s, OSP continues to serve as a vital resource and source of support for victims throughout the Shasta community. The impact of this organization cannot be overstated. I look forward to helping strengthen the partnership between law enforcement and victim advocacy, with the goal of improving coordination, enhancing the criminal justice process, and ultimately achieving better outcomes for victims.

Dancing with the Stars is one of OSP’s two signature fundraisers. On Saturday night, my wife and I attended the sold-out event alongside fellow OSP board members. The evening was a powerful example of the community’s unwavering support for an important cause and the commitment to helping those who need it most.

I am honored to serve and look forward to supporting OSP’s mission and the important work it does for our community.

The Medal of Valor (MOV) is the most prestigious public safety award bestowed in recognition of extraordinary acts of heroism and bravery.
Each year, the California State Sheriffs’ Association (CSSA) honors deputies with the MOV and celebrates their courageous service at a formal ceremony. I have the privilege of serving on the selection committee alongside several of my fellow sheriffs. We review numerous nominations submitted from across California’s 58 counties and select the individuals who will receive this distinguished honor.
This year’s ceremony was held in Santa Barbara, hosted by legendary Sheriff Bill Brown, and recognized deputies from San Diego, Marin, San Joaquin, and San Bernardino counties. Our guest Master of Ceremonies was actor Don Johnson, best known for his role portraying the character Sonny Crockett on the 1980’s hit series Miami Vice.
This annual ceremony is truly moving and serves as a powerful reminder of the dedication, sacrifice, and commitment demonstrated by members of the law enforcement profession.
Congratulations and thank you to each of this year’s recipients for going above and beyond in protecting our communities and their fellow officers.

In other CSSA business we discussed current case law rulings, legal issues surrounding jail administration, law enforcement operational issues, organized crime, and proposed legislation for the upcoming 2027 year. I will be disseminating additional information in a later post regarding some of the California specific legislative issues that are crippling law enforcement efforts to protect our communities and undermine police related activities (ie - SB 54).

On Saturday, Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper hosted the third annual “Sheriff’s Rodeo” in Folsom, California. Sheriffs from Sutter, Yuba, Napa, Nevada, Sonoma, Placer, and Shasta counties joined the event to celebrate the occasion and show their support for the many law enforcement agencies represented.

The rodeo was an example of wholesome American tradition, an appreciation for Western culture, and a shared respect for the men and women who serve to keep our communities safe and maintain peace and order.

As Sheriff, I continue to work with our county Ag Commissioner to address the impact gray wolves are having on our ranchers. You will find comprehensive information on the situation here in our county, and details on the important work being done by Commissioner Ingram in coordination with state and federal authorities at this link:
https://www.shastacounty.gov/media/86036
In researching this information, I would like to extend a special thank you to George and Christine McArthur, and Henry Giacomini, for taking the time to host and educate me on cattle operations and the impacts of the Grey Wolf. George was gracious enough to spend most of the day with me and take me into the mountains to the site of two wolf/cattle kills. Henry shared experiences with kills on the valley floor at his ranch.

Saturday in Palo Cedro

Honeybee Festival
My wife and I started our Saturday by taking our granddaughter to breakfast at the Honeybee Festival. We had a great time visiting the local booths and vendors. Before long, we had her all glammed up, bought her an ice cream, and turned her loose on the playground with all the other kids.

Palo Cedro Rodeo
What a success! Hats off to everyone who worked so hard to put this event together. Not only was it a great turnout, but it was also incredibly well organized. Palo Cedro should be proud!

For 40 years, Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) has hosted its annual “Open House” event. The three-day gathering provides an educational display and showcase of the company’s resources, operations, mills, and environmental strategies. SPI business clients from across the country are hosted and celebrated throughout the week.

On Thursday late afternoon and into the evening, I joined other local community members at SPI headquarters along the river for great food, fellowship, and an opportunity to connect with others in our community.

Assemblywoman Heather Hadwick presented an award to Shasta Area Safety Communications Agency (SHASCOM) recognizing the agency for providing exceptional service to the citizens of Shasta County. SHASCOM is a professional emergency dispatching agency of approximately 47 personnel who serve the Shasta County community with the majority of public safety emergency communications (Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS) within the county. Attached is a photograph of the appreciative SHASCOM personnel receiving the award with SCSO Director Lieutenant Kody Bodner.

Thank you dispatchers! Well deserved.
