Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs & Enhanced Care Management: Building Whole-Person Care 🌱
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs reminds us of something incredibly important in healthcare: people cannot focus on thriving when they are still fighting to survive.
We often think of healthcare as appointments, medications, diagnoses, and treatment plans. But health is influenced by so much more.
A person may need to manage their diabetes—but what happens when they don’t have reliable access to food?
They may need to attend specialist appointments—but what happens when they don’t have transportation?
They may need to prioritize their mental health—but what happens when they are sleeping in their car and wondering where they will be tomorrow?
This is where Enhanced Care Management (ECM) and whole-person care become so powerful.
Maslow’s Hierarchy moves from physiological needs → safety → love and belonging → esteem → self-actualization. ECM recognizes that these needs do not exist separately from healthcare.
Through care coordination, ECM can help address barriers such as housing instability, food insecurity, transportation, access to medical and behavioral healthcare, medication access, social support, and connections to community resources.
Because sometimes improving someone's health doesn't start inside a doctor's office.
Sometimes it starts with a safe place to sleep.
A ride to an appointment.
Access to nutritious food.
Someone helping navigate a complicated healthcare system.
Or simply having someone consistently ask, “What do you need right now?”
That is the heart of whole-person care: seeing the person before the diagnosis and understanding that health is shaped by the physical, emotional, social, and environmental realities of someone's life.
We cannot ask people to reach the top of the pyramid while the foundation beneath them is unstable.
ECM helps strengthen that foundation—one need, one connection, and one person at a time. 🌿
