Before You Burn This Fall, Know the Rules

The yard looks a lot different in August and September. Grass dries out, brush goes dormant, and leaves start dropping. All of that dead material burns faster and spreads further than most people expect.

A few things worth knowing before you light anything outside: always check whether an open burn ban is in effect for our area before starting a fire. Keep a water source close by. Never burn when it's windy. And don't leave a fire unattended, even briefly.

If you're unsure about local burn regulations, Dallas County Emergency Management posts current conditions. A quick check takes less than a minute and can save a lot of trouble.

A Quick Reminder as the Seasons Change

Fall is here, and that means a lot of small routines are shifting. It's also one of the best times of year to test your smoke alarms.

The standard guidance is twice a year. With clocks changing and schedules adjusting, this stretch of the season is a natural moment to build that into your routine. Press the test button, swap out any weak batteries, and confirm every level of your home has a working detector.

It takes about two minutes. And if something ever goes wrong in the middle of the night, those two minutes today are what give us a chance to reach you in time.

The grill is off, but the coals might not be

Most people figure once the flames are gone, the grill is safe to leave. But charcoal can hold heat for hours after it looks cold, sometimes well past midnight if you cooked in the evening.

The step that gets skipped: before you head inside, douse the coals with water, stir them, and douse again. Then leave the lid off so heat can escape. A closed grill traps warmth and keeps embers alive far longer than most people expect.

Ash and coals should sit in a metal container with a lid, not a cardboard box, not a trash bag, for at least 48 hours before disposal. Plastic bins have started fires in garages and on decks more times than we'd like to count.

A few extra minutes at the end of a good cookout goes a long way. Enjoy the rest of the summer. 🙂

PRESS RELEASE

September 6, 2026

On September 5 at 9:47 pm, the Redfield Fire Department was paged out to a reported structure fire at the Stine Research and Storage facility at 1519 Old Hwy 6.

Units went enroute at 9:50 and immediately requested Dexter and Adel Fire Departments for man power and water supply. Upon arrival at 9:52, firefighters found an industrial building with heavy fire and smoke showing. Additional resources from Earlham, Stuart, and Perry were requested.

An aggressive fire attack prevented the fire from spreading into the rest of the involved structure or to any nearby structures. The fire was deemed under control at 10:48 and Redfield started releasing units from the scene. All Redfield units were released from the scene at 12:10.

Your Firefighters Are Here Because of You

We’re not just the folks in the trucks, we’re neighbors, friends, and family who show up when the need arises. As a 100% volunteer department, our strength comes from the community we serve. That’s why we’re always looking for ways to connect, learn, and grow together.

Whether it’s helping with a local event, sharing a tip on home safety, or simply saying hello, every interaction matters. We want to know more about the people who make our town special. Your stories, ideas, and support help us stay ready for whatever comes our way.

If you’ve ever wondered how you can be part of something bigger, we’d love to hear from you. It’s not about signing up right now, it’s about building a relationship. We’re here for you, and we’d like to be part of your story too.

We're Here for You, Always

You might not see us every day, but we’re always ready when you need us. As a volunteer fire department serving Redfield, Linden, and surrounding areas, our main goal is to be there for the people we call neighbors. Whether it’s a fire, a medical emergency, or just someone needing a hand, we’re part of this community, just like you.

We work hard to stay prepared, train regularly, and make sure our equipment is always ready. It’s not just about responding to calls; it’s about being part of the solution. Our volunteers give their time because they care, and that’s what makes our work meaningful. We’re not just firefighters, we’re neighbors helping neighbors.

Thanks for being part of our story. Together, we’re building a safer, stronger community. If you ever have questions or want to learn more, just reach out. We’re here for you, always.

Don't forget to join us for breakfast in the morning. We can't wait to see you!
